Hey all, first time i have written on here. Have a 88 GQ TB42 on gas. Lovin it and looking forward to gettin dirty with it. Only problem is i cant start her up  . Replaced alternator, Distributer cap, contact in Distributer, Battery, Leads, Distributer Rotor button. Tested the coil and it is within spec. It just stalled on me as I was going around a corner, ran for another couple of K's then wouldn't start. Only thing i noticed before hand was it was running at around 16-17V. Any advice would certainly be appreciated.

G'day mate - welcome aboard. Great people, information and laughs on here mate, so feel free to join in and make the most of it.

Was it that voltage before the alternator swap? If so, I'd be looking to replace battery as well ... if after, then it's overcharging and you'll need to,have that looked into mate - others on here will be able to assist with that no doubt.

Being its on gas, you probably want a gas specialist to look at it and make sure it is being injected - did you test coil for spark? How long since the plugs were changed? Also, is it actually cranking but not starting, or simply not cranking at all? If the latter, then starter motor might have pooped itself?

As said, people,on here who can assist and point you in the right direction mate - best of luck with it!!

Enjoy!!

Not to bright mechanically but does it have one of those ceramic ballast resistor thingys, don't know what they're for or do but I do know if you got one and it's cracked it will cause same prob's.

Thanks all for the welcome. 'BigRig', had the high voltage before the new alternator was installed. Replaced the battery as well as the old one didnt look too healthy. Havent been able to start it since. I tested the coil with a meter against the specs i found on the net and seems to be ok. It is cranking but not starting, found a 'safety cut off' switch connected to the gas system that was burnt out and have ordered a new one. wont arrive for 2 days. Curious as to wether it is safe to bypass. Had a look at the ballast resistor but entirely sure what readings im supposed to get, getting 12v in but about 5-6v out. other than that im runnig out of ideas.

I think the gas cut out solenoid is there so if you crash or have a leak, etc the gas supply shuts off rather then continuing to bellow out. Prob wouldn't bypass it, unless just for testing to prove it will work afterwards.

The ballast resistor sounds like it is working. If it were broken our cracked you would get open circuit from the test and the car would crank ok, fire and start but then cut out. Would not continue to run after you let go of the key from start.
