Hi there!

I am new to the forum, and have just recently got my first patrol!
For now it is original, but i have som small plans for it, but first some pictures:

12555

12556

12558

12559

12560

I am going to use it to work, so i need to do some things to it:

- It has 7 seats, but i will only keep the front two and build a more rugged interior from water-resistant plywood and some drawer-sections for my tools

- Currently there it just some ski holders (as we call them in norway, dont know any other name) But i need something more stable. I drive with alot of pies and such on the roof. Therefore i am going to make myself a roof rack from stainless steel tubes, and fasten them with the skiholder-feet.

- In Norway there is many months with sun only during the day, and very dark mornings and evenings. At the winter it is dark both when i go to work and come home from it. Some worklights in the roof rack should take care of that. I got 2 of these today: Hella PowerBeam 1000 (http://www.hella.com/produktion/HellaSG/WebSite/MiscContent/Download/Wholesalers/Powerbeam1000.pdf)

- I allso drive alot with trailers. Regular trailers, telephonepole-trailers and cable-trailers. To make it easyer for myself i will have a rear view camera in the roof rack to reverse onto the trailers without running back to see how far it is left all the time.

- For the rear view camera i must allso have a screen, and i dont like the windshield-mounted types. In my car there is only a regular 1DIN CD-player, and as far as i can find out i cant get a hold of a 2DIN frame originally. So i must modify the one i have. I dont like the 1DIN players with the flip-out type screen either :P

As i go down the list, i will post updates with pictures if anybody wants to see the progress :)

And i really like feedback to my plans and doings :D

might be worth getting on skype and making some phone calls to some australian wreckers for that part of the dash... im sure you be able to find one pretty easy from over here mate...

Today i ordered a CD-player and a rear view camera:

2DIN headunit:
Clarion VX709E (http://www.google.no/search?q=clarion+vx709e&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=no&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=M1ExT6mwHIbP4QSt6enjBA&biw=1366&bih=643&sei=NVExT6KkN5TY4QTq4uSHBQ)

Rear view camera:
Kenwood CMOS-200 (http://www.google.no/search?q=clarion+vx709e&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=no&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=M1ExT6mwHIbP4QSt6enjBA&biw=1366&bih=643&sei=NVExT6KkN5TY4QTq4uSHBQ#um=1&hl=no&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=kenwood+cmos-200&pbx=1&oq=kenwood+cmo&aq=0L&aqi=g-L2&aql=&gs_sm=e&gs_upl=23575l27760l0l29203l11l10l0l0l0l0l809l2793l 3-1.1.1.2l5l0&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.,cf.osb&fp=3bc2abf5a9ed08ea&biw=1366&bih=643)

Picking them up tomorrow i hope! :D The headunit was an old model they had, but is discontiniued now, so instead of the original price of 9990kr (1600AUD) i got it for 4000kr (640AUD) :)

I also made a quick sketch of the roof rack i am going to make:

Top
12620

Front
12625

Side
12626

Overlook
12621

Front ekstralights brackets
12622

12627

Work/reverse lights and rear view camera brackets
12623

12624

The lights (both front and back) are going to hang on the underside, same with the rear view camera :)

I am going to make it from round tubes instead of the square tubes on the sketch, just easier to make a sketch with squares :)

Got my headunit and rear view camera today! Yey :)

12653

Just quickly done by cutting the bar between the org. player and the compartment below.
It made a gap under the new headunit, but i can put buttons for the light under it, so it went okay!

Will do itj properly when i get the buttons ready!

Yesterday glued the plastic bar that i cut off back on to the frame under the headunit, so i can put the light-switches there when i get them. Guess they are stuck in the mail for now.

Connected a AUX phono-cable so i can connect my phone and play music from spotify etc. as well.

Cut off

I allso i fitted the rear view camera to the patrol. Sits just fine over the licenceplate, on the side of the handle.

I ordered some orange LED strobes to put on the roof rack so people can see me when i work by the road.

Now i have finished the plate for the buttons:

Under construction, template below

Finished:
12852

A minor bummer when i inserted the LED's tho, they would not fit in their sockets.. Going to make something different there, but dont know what just yet.

Allso i ordered 18m of 30mm stainless steel pipe and 8 90deg bends for my roof rack, guessing they will come after the weekend. I will take some pictures when i start building.

Used the wall of a pumpstation under construction as a jig:

The roof rack complete with brackets for the worklights, but without the brackets for the strobe warninglights. Also missing the brackets to fasten the rack to the ski-holders:

Now finally! :D

Used 8-9 hours yesterday to finish the roofrack, most of the time went to get the wires inside the tubes (4 wires from each of the strobes and 2 from the worklights)

Looks good mate. What sort of weight are you looking at carrying on you roof rack?

HitMix
24th February 2012, 06:18 AM
Well its quite overdimentionated, i probably wont have more than 5-6-7 6m long 110mm plastic pipes so not so much weight. The rack-weight is probably 20-25kgs as it is now, and i am only allowed to have 100kgs on the roof anyway (norwegian rules as to how much weight i can carry)

Does anyone have any information about a socalled "2inch receiver" tow hitch for y61 patrols? I found this type via google: TOW HITCH (http://www.sulit.com.ph/index.php/view+classifieds/id/3223902/TOW+HITCH+RECEIVER+NISSAN+PATROL+(GU-Y61)+2000-2011) but it says fro 2000 and up.

Is this something you can get originally from Nissan? what about a tow hitch on the frontend, would be nice to have a winch or so that can be mounted both front and rear just by switching places :)

Possibly talking about a square tube and bracket that fit on the back of the H frame and you feed the tow ball into it and lock it into the square tube with a pin. Thats what I have and you can pick them up most anywhere.

....But i need something more stable. I drive with alot of pies and such on the roof...

Hey mate. Very nice truck. I'm pretty impressed with your "quick sketching" ability there. I'd balls that up for sure!

Can I please just clarify what you mean by 'pies' in your first post. I just have an odd mental image of a meat pie sitting on your roof rack as your just driving around town.

Keep it up mate. Should be an awesome bit of gear when it's done!

Hah, missed a "p" there =p Supposed to be pipes ;) i work with telephone cables in the air and the ground, and in central areas these cables in the ground go in plastic pipes (4" wide and 6m long) and those i have on the roofrack ;)
