As the title says, the bolt was that rusty it snapped at the base of the captive nut when i was undoing it. this captive nut lies inside the radiator support panel and is difficult to access. does anyone know of an easier way of getting it out than cutting it out?

You could try drilling then using a easy out remember to use lots of WD40 and let it soak in. If this doesn't work you may have drill out completly try not to damage the nut to much then run a tap through it to cut a new thread.
eg if its a 10mm bolt drill out to 8mm then run the 10mm tap through it.
