Cleared some space/mess today so I could properly (face to face) introduce old Grandpa GQ to his new donor GU Shed Queen both soon to be swapping highway <>track roles.
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/01/112.jpg
Golden Gramps is booked in early February for some 2” spring work with 3” shocks for preferred down travel and all his rods/arms are getting upgraded to 21st century weaponry.
First things first, need to swap across the 35’s before any of that work is done and final balance/alignment mid February.
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/01/113.jpg
Gained 40mm today testing out a theory as to try and keep him looking somewhat to 35 year old spec and OEM flares/mud flaps in place.

Have struggled to find anyone to roll the guards properly so opted for the cut & fold method learnt on here from others kind sharing. (Multi-Tool seemed to keep the heat down nicely versus a grinder)

Stripped off all the rusty old steel support brackets for the OEM mud flaps.
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/01/118.jpg
Tek-Screws are only temporary before I remove all and paint/ nutsert-rivnut.
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/01/119.jpg
A whisker more panel beating required before final rustproofing to take the kink out of the line but happy enough for now, hopefully no 35” lugs clip at full lock descending is the aim of the game here [emoji106]

Very impressive @MB, looks quite robust and a great profile idea to give that glancing function. Can't wrap my mind around the oil reservoir or storage area just yet - are the oil containers to slide inside the 150x40 RHS or be a boxy compartment on the rails but outside the line of carnage? Just need the electric fence installed to keep that brute off the side panels and you are totally ready!! You are chasing 3940 for the win.

Rough calculations should be able to carry 11L of TD42 sump oil on the drivers side main slider & the same volume of gear oil on the passengers side.
Haven’t calculated the wings each side yet but should hopefully fit enough full concentrate radiator coolant shared between both wings to mix up 50/50 from my water jerry cans if in an unfortunate radiator dump damage situation [emoji51]

So, how does it get into the engine or diff or radiator without a container, that it comes in one to begin with? Are you looking at a coke bottle or something to fill and transfer? Clever use of typically dead space, have heard comp trucks using rollbars for air reservoirs but not this idea. Very little chance of leaks also based on your construction. Good one.

Yeah I was gonna say mate. That gauge will last 5 minutes. Then you'll have no air. If it were me. Get some decent steel braided air lines made up to fit where the gauge is sitting in your pic. Then either run the new line up to a gauge out of the way, or plumb it into a gauge in the cab. The latter is what I would do, then you can keep an eye on the gauge whilst surfing the whoopdies of the VHC.

Cheers Mate! Have to agree it was great fun watching the heavy GU utes full on-air bellow gauges incab on the whoopdies [emoji23] [emoji106]
Quite handy too for chassis protection as you could really visualise the strain she was going through sometimes witnessed massive 60-100psi fluctuations side to side out there fully loaded.
Should be ok this time around as the little GQ has been weighed up for some Dobinson rear variable coils of 50mm lift and a 200kg constant load rating with the inner coil bags only as ride levelling backup this time around.
Shouldn’t need to watch the gauges so fiercely and they’ll hopefully run below 5psi most times unless highway towing or a quick external top up if hauling firewood back to camp out there [emoji1696][emoji106]

@MB, the air lines are imperial, 1/4" from memory, not as readily avail as the metric stuff and from experience 4 times the price. I would get a 6m length and a couple of in-line joiners as well.(let me know if you cannot get the joiners as I have a few here you can grab.)I run my airbags inside 3/8 clear/reinforced airline as well. The gauges have never worked for me in-cabin as the bend radiuses to the gauge and from the air bags, plus the flexing, I found the hoses came loose and leaked over time behind the gauge. I think if I go this way in the future I will go this electronic gauges instead of the mechanical. Regards the location and use of that gauge, look, if you protect it it and maybe relocate it out of any line of fire or foot thumping, tree bashing, it will be fine. Focus for me would be the bending of the airline and as mudski suggests a hose will be better than a plastic line, but saying that, there are 100,000's of air locker installations out there running 5mm airline in very severe locations without issue i would say. Protec the line and the gauge and the little cheapie will do the job - they are an industrial application gauge and you don't need oil filled for this application, and accuracy is not a priority. Vehicle is coming along well it looks, going to be well set up for the battle.

FWIW: Have had 30psi max inner coil bags in the family GU wagon for years towing varying weight lunging forward horses and many a half gnarly off-road adventure shared too.
Was a most simple KISS wagon standard install with the two rear air valves routed up to each underside of the steel Kaymar rear bar.
It only ever had one failure on the rear left plastic line down on Climies Track Tasmania where the exhaust was kindly redirected upwards and burnt through a loose line [emoji51]
Pain the arse well protected valve location though as you have to climb underneath to check how things are going.
FWIW-2: Amazing how much airbags psi changes throughout even a short weekend in the high country areas ranging from 140m - 1,400m ASL trekking [emoji106]

First impressions so far, they appear extremely well heavy cast, certainly a stronger contour mounting design from the old farm spec mirrors I was truly worried about peeling the door panel open if ever clipped.
Bottom holes unfortunately didn’t line up, no big problem and no doubt the old farm doors issue and not Ocam’s.
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/01/197.jpg
Again not Ocam’s design problem but I will deliberately look to voiding my warranty by delving deep inside their folding mechanism to hopefully achieve an easy extra 10-15 degrees off their OEM bump stops for gnarlier track needs/wants [emoji23]

good to see you in the pages mate. Yes i agree, i did think that the other day MB when you first posted. as long as you can get the TPM into the line then it would be simple enough. I assume you are not looking to pump up or adjust on the fly then it is basic. Would not be that hard either way though surely.

Took the truck down to Dobinsons for new rear springs 2 weeks ago and on the way down the water detector light flickered, and when coming home it was running rough at idle. Decided to swap out the two filters in the fuel line. So, got them out and replaced in about an hour,(no water evident, fuel clean and clear) then 7 hrs later got the truck running. Would not start, cranked but no go. So started at the lift pump and up to the IP, and out the other side to the fuel return line at the tank. There was a blockage of some sort. Long story short, the IP solenoid valve 12V supply was flickering then dropped to zero. Checked fuse on the main engine control circuit, all good - one of them powers the solenoid. Anyway, ran a 12V jumper from the battery POS to the solenoid and off she fired. . Initially I thought I had a fuel line kink or similar, but at least I know for sure the hoses are kink free. So, happy to some degree at least it isn't something major, but now more electrical tracing to sort this one out. I head back to the mine Wed morning so for now the problem can sit until i get back.

Also bought one of the bent adjust rear diff control arms to get a bit of clearance over the belly tank - might throw that in tomorrow as a reward for todays jink around.

Electrical gremlins are fun hey Phil...

I am well used to them as generally I generate them! This one however looks like something in the Brunswick loom splice. i will think it thru - either leave it like it is with a simple jumper, or dig into it and resolve. If i don't fix it, the turbo timer won't work, and its probably not roadworthy either as I can't turn it off with the key? Its got to be simple, just well hidden at the moment and my mind is not in the space to sort it right now.

Decided to inspect the old highway GQ’s snorkel and entire air intake system for potential water intake on future river crossings.
Bloody glad I did, the stupid snorkel design doesn’t even connect to the OEM dust catcher guard thingy.

Bugger it all off I decided and got to grinding off the plastic snorkel flange and blasted a hole big enough for a 4” elbow to pass through.

This cannister appears to be missing a rubber sealant ring:

Checked another bigger Donaldson on the diesel generator and it definitely has one:

Problem I’m having is trying to track down a part number and or if this model even was released with one?

Hi Mark.
I just checked, This is an FWA Cyclopac housing, now obsolete. On the parts listing, there is no lid gasket, there is for the larger FWA housings, but not for this one. This housing is reverse flow too, meaning air goes in the end and out the side. All other housings are opposite. The clamp is NIL stock at Donaldson. They are due late Feb. Replacement filters P182054 is Nil also, but we stock the Fleetguard variant here, AF409KM...
One concern mate, air flow. According to my book, air flow on this housing is 202 CFM, my air flow calculations for the stock N/a TD42 is 265CFM. Whack a turbo on it and it jumps to over 800.

Interesting numbers mudski, as this is the standard unit supplied for the 6.5 Brunswick conversions, would be well under done.

From a quick googly search on engine specs, my results show 351cfm is required for a N/A model. There is different types or models of this engine so that may vary.

I’m dearly hoping I’ve accidentally confused the query with possibly the wrong part numbers given above.
Hoping if you’re still at work you could kindly check the cfm rating for me on the Baldwin filter element pictured below that was last changed over time n the Chev before complete removal.

The main body of the Donaldson can is also 300mm long + its end cap (crap collector) length of 75mm all in 8” diameter.
The incoming air on this old model definitely comes in from the side so that all the large particles cyclone their way to the cap and all finer filtered air heads off to the engine down the centre of the filter element and out the end as far as I can guesstimate its design?

That Baldwin filter is the same as what should be in there. Flow is not measured using the element, its measured by housing design, or type. I did find another different housing that uses the clamp and filter, this uses the conventional flow, air in the side and out the end, but the lid have a rubber vacuator valve on it. The lids can be swapped around so your housing possibly could be this too. Flow rates are similar also.

Wish I had bought a panel style housing rather than the Fatz pod box I have now. Better flow out of the LS panel filter, larger total surface area = better filtration capacity and more of an even flow. The Fatz box the air hits the blank end of the filter first, then has to travel around to enter the element. The panel box, the air goes in, and straight through the filter with no flow disruption.

While its not ideal its not the worst out there. You can run a slightly shorter filter to allow some extra room for the element.

Its about trying to get the air to slow down as much as possible before the element so the element has the best conditions to filter the rocks out.

This is where k&n type filters are good. They will filter better at higher airspeeds and they also will continue to filter well until they are blocked.

For the time being any other vehicle for me is my patrol while mine sits woefully in the back yard.

I spend the evening in the shed, sitting out a broken spindle on my ride on. I sourced replacement spindles from Amazon, with the help of a parts manual, picked up genuine ones for a mere $65. New spindle is now installed and I've even tacked some chain onto the deck chute to slow down rocks as the OEM deflector was broken well before I bought it, and replaced with some 3mm plate.

For a novice welder with just a basic aldi stick inverter welder I'm happy with the end result. The last chains attached went on much easier than the first ones.

mudski, you have me confused. Here is the initial assessment you made re the TD42 turbo airflow requirements
'According to my book, air flow on this housing is 202 CFM, my air flow calculations for the stock N/a TD42 is 265CFM. Whack a turbo on it and it jumps to over 800', and then above
'for a 16.5L V12 Genset. It ended up running two Donaldson "Powercore" housings, one per bank, which were rated circa 800cfm each'

What I don't understand is how a 4.2 turbo engine requires say 800cfm and a 16.5L only requires 1600cfm? I am assuming the genset is running at a 'high idle speed and the TD42 at full snot? Curious to understand how you derive the flow ratings?

This Genset's max rpm is only 1400 rpm. Not a lot. A TD42 is 4000. RPM is a big factor, more than engine size.

Yep. I assume mudski has access to some nice calculators for this stuff. But a td42 that will rev to 4000rpm ideally should have a minimum flow requirement of 800-900cfm.

If the genset is a turbo diesel then it ideally requires a minimum of 1200cfm. This could change if its a gas powered genset though.

I'd really love to know what a factory Fuel filter assembly is rated for. My Patrol's flow is 145.7 Litres Per Hour.

Interesting, however I can tell you my 6.5 does not use anything like that, verified with twin flowmeters and a fuel management computer. I don't think anyone would get very far down the road if they used this data!

I do remember when I burst the seams on my GU rear main tank on a rock and had to quickly externally plumb the filter pickup line out through the bonnet corner and direct like a syphon hose into the forward auxiliary tank filler nozzle to get up and out of the shit quickly.
Philstar you kindly educated me then that some huge amount (can’t remember %) of diesel delivery volume heads immediately back to the main tank of which could be the filters overall rated needs if that makes nuffy theory sense?
Certainly the main rear tank gauge filled up quickly climbing out but we were back up onto flat highway country by then to re-plumb the system back to standard and use the 1/3 full to get back home safely [emoji106][emoji106]

Yes, I should have said, maximum fuel flow. e.g being hard on the go pedal, absolute flat knacker, pushing as most amount of fuel the engine is capable of, for an hour.
Flow for an engine, is measure at maximum, so in reality, yes the engine would not come near this. It would be impossible to rate flow at an average.

That calculation too was given to me by Parker at our last conference, its what they use, and being probably the most knowledgeable company in the world for fuel filtration, I can only assume its right.

Installed a 200 ah Enerdrive lifepo4 battery and Enerdrive 40+ dc2dc charger. Should keep my 2 Waeco 50l fridges (one used as a freezer) humming along nicely. Covid willing will be heading to the Geo Centre of the Simpson in April, can't wait.

The lifepo4 battery replace two Fullriver 105 ah AGMs I have had on board for years, saved 40 kg in weight :smiley_thumbs_up:

My first and only honest concern found was the choice of using the rubber nipple drain thingy much like on my tractor Donaldson that I wouldn’t dare take fully underwater through the creek.

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/02/40.jpg

Decided to stop by Rossco ‘s (The Skinny Mountain GQ Bushman’s :-) shed to gauge his well Legendary experienced deep underwater off-road thoughts for my concerns.

Agreed together that it wasn’t extreme optimal and maybe a manual on/off mechanical simple valve like our other ‘Millweld’ beloved airboxes should be adapted for peace of mind.

Couldn’t help myself later and decided to get a secondary Legendary opinion/advice from the (Vic-Otways Swamp Nutter) MudRunnerTD.

All three of us are now confirmed on the same page concerned for the OEM design and Daz has kindly put forward a simple solution he’s faithfully used before as I have been known to forget shutting off the manual valve on my other airbox drain.

They do work those little valves. If you have a think about it. When the engine is running there is vacuum being pulled inside the airbox. So with vacuum it pulls the rubber valve inwards and seals not allowing any fluid in. This is why it didn't work in your bath tub.

Se below a snip from the Donaldson catalog.

The Vacuator Valve, standard on
the majority of Donaldson air
cleaners, is an important part
of the functionality of the air
cleaner. It is an integral part of
the pre-cleaning stage on two stage
air cleaners.
The dust cup, where pre-cleaned
dust is collected, is normally
under a slight vacuum when
the engine is running. The
normal engine pulsing of the
vacuum causes the Vacuator
Valve to open and close. This
action automatically expels any
collected dust and water. The
Vacuator Valve also unloads
when the engine is stopped.
For the longest filter service life, replace damaged or
missing Vacuator Valves immediately!
If your valve is cracked, torn, remains open, or is missing, dust particles that are
normally expelled can deposit themselves onto the filter and will shorten air filter
service life. Replace it!
The Donaldson Vacuator Valve,
also known as VacValve, is
made in a variety of sizes
and shapes to fit various
applications. The Donaldson
part number is molded into
each part for easy identification.

There is nothing wrong with what you have done and what you say is right. The valve is ineffective without the engine running. Just pointing out its operation.

Engine protection aside. Be careful when attempting to cross anything that is deeper than the bonnet

So....I’m back in love again with the new airbox after easy installation this afternoon, thanks heaps again Mat for the top product suggestion and apologies Gentlemen & ‘Black Mamba’ for my late night sook up earlier here[emoji51][emoji23]
As mentioned, a piece of piss to install and plenty of wriggle room to choose left/right/forward and also backwards too if you move your GQ overflow bottle as they advertise:
(I settled on slightly backwards and slightly right twisted out off the guard a whisker so that my 10mm socket could whip the top off fast if ever needed)

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/02/74.jpg

Reduced it down for now from 4” to 3” via the first 90 degree bend only because I had all the 3” gear leftover from the previous setup trials.

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/02/75.jpg

Design angles out of the top of the airbox are absolutely perfect and it could easily clear a TD42t GQ alternator vacuum pump with 4” piping all the way through if needed folks [emoji106][emoji106]

Can’t really be bothered mounting/wiring it safely inside the cab as have done on other trucks before so are playing around with shielding it from exhaust heat somewhere around here:

Cheers Rossco Mate, have been thinking the same since posting as it should barely kick in unless I have an unfortunate sneaky line leak in the system somewhere as they can known do [emoji51]
There’s no possibility that something inside the compressor could shite itself and head on into the engine, I have no idea what’s inside these thingys although maybe a cheapo fuel filter in-line between could trap anything untoward heading back in?
Think I’m possibly overthinking it too much now too [emoji23]

Another tyre rotation today.

Decided to go back through my service book to see how long I've had these.

Purchased on 05/07/16 with Speedo reading 285272 km.

Speedo is now at 366084 + 16558 when I had no Speedo, so

366,084 + 16,558 = 382,642 - 285,272 =

A grand total of 97,370km in 4 years and 7 months. In that time I've rotated all 5 tyres between 7 - 10,000km. This was the 9th time. Unfortunately they have only seen the tracks about 1/2 a dozen times the rest has been on the block top.

Not know why, but 4 of them are like the first pic and the other is the 2nd pic, can't really see it in the pic, but the 2nd does have more meat and is less cambar..http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/02/82.jpghttp://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/02/83.jpg

Unfortunately too Daz the rising inner tube wicked solution will struggle to work I believe for this specific airboxes position/scenario found as there is zero swing/elevation room for the tail end to complete its cutoff mission under swamping.
Have started plumbing up a fully sealed system with an old school manual drain that should sump/pipe snorkel splash collect up to a calculated 0.5L before the external lowest release valve to come needs releasing [emoji120][emoji120]

Bought a plumbers one-way check valve on the way home from work:

Drilled a tiny hole in the end of its outlet shaft:

A mini brass eyelet screw in the end and a pair of nipple rings attached:

Give her a tug and she squirts all over the place:
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/02/95.jpg
Think I’ll keep it manually activated from outdoors if needed but in theory comp truck blokes could add on an old school choke cable system to activate an emergency drain whilst on the racing fly maybe [emoji848]

Nice work Chrisso Mate [emoji23][emoji106][emoji106]
Before you get safety flamed, I can see you’re carefully just rolling the weed matting back and lightly popping the shrubs very shallow roots easily.
My honest question is though, how on earth did you connect your hook to the weed matting without ripping through in milliseconds ?
Some sort of graspy clampy useful thingy?

Took a bit of a gamble yesterday purchasing a D31A for the GQ’s main battery as I’ve only ever been able to fit slightly smaller D27’s in GU’s main trays length/width wise previously believed.
Thankfully it did fit last night tested with only a slight position twist required which was made possible by the offset spiral core design:

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/02/108.jpg

Next overlooked problems found were the D31A terminal posts are all mounted central unlike the D27 variants with standard off-sets & the taller battery height brought the terminals too close for comfort to the closed steel bonnet heat lining.

Problem easily solved thanks to ‘Baxters’ passing through there today:

http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/02/109.jpg

‘Unilug’ is a brilliant Aussie design just found and are so happy I don’t have to modify the OEM engine wires longer to reach too [emoji120][emoji106][emoji736]

Not sure what that equates too for a TD, but the that can is the Provent 100. 100 meaning for engines up to 100kw.

Sorta off topic but I sold 8 Parker units to a customer late last year. Each genset required two cans capable say to the equivalent of a 400kw engine. They were nearly 4grand each. These things were massive too. Had to fly them in from the US as well.
I get to see and sell some funky stuff from time to time.

Shouldn't a heat shield like this be light coloured (absorbs less radiated heat than dark) and glossy (reflect more heat than matte finish)?

How about just a thin piece of polished stainless or similar. Pretty sure any mirror-like finish should prove effective as a shield based on my old school physics where we delved into the workings of the vacuum thermos flask which uses such surfaces. Of course the vacuum gap would help as well but that may be just a tad more difficult to achieve, but a small air gap might help as well if it is mostly radiated heat causing the problem.
What you need to achieve is minimum absorption on the outside and minimum radiation from the inside. And even better if you can get a little cooling air flow on the inside.

10G
19th February 2021, 10:40 AM
I put a piece of bent ally chequer plate on the outside of my 2nd battery holder. Only had 1 90 degree bent bit, so I left about a 10mm gap between the end of the holder and plate up where the turbo is. Don't know if makes any diff, but it's something.

Black ally, or ally coated black, is used to suck heat out of stuff when attached to the stuff and silver to repel the heat.

PeeBee

Yes, its ambiguous in VIC for sure. The VSB covering light bars states they are allowable as long as they dont protrude past the bullbar profile, in itself a point of contention when BB are normally laid backwards towards the bonnet, but if they dont stick past the edge of the BB they are OK, however it is ultimately up to Const PLOD as to whether in his assessment they pose a 'dazzle issue' for oncoming traffic. He is free to make this determination if they are off as well. For that reason I purchased black out plastic covers for my roofrack mounted lightbar and will unclip when off the main traffic highways. I also went the ARB Intensity lightbar on the premise these guys would have looked into the detail before launching a product like theirs onto the world market.

Picked the GQ project up from the 4WD Shed team during the week, the BlackHawk front radius arms have certainly achieved what I was hoping for greater 35” guard clearance as my 40mm chop still wasn’t enough.

It’s definitely back Mate, have been ripping my hair out today trying to get the big custom forward sub tank plumbed up again. It was a gravity fed faithful system with a ball valve that was positioned exactly where the Superior ute plate rear tower brace now sits.

Nothing so exciting, just oils, fluids, filters, greases, draining catch can and getting rid of the rest of the Watagans forest track mud from underneath that the K'Archer missed. Gotta love old tricks even when 3/4 of it is new:wink:

Found issue with cooling and temp gauge gremlin. :animierte-smil

Bad news...now onto Brunswick in WA organizing warranty claim for what is either cracked heads or blown head gaskets on an engine 11 months old with 28000 Kms on it.

Found coolant tank was pressuring even on cold start as was running on OBD scan on the temp sender output to get a confidence check that the gauge is telling me good info (as was prepping to have digital A/M gauge installed). It was and coolant still cool and the signal was correct, but reservoir already bubbling and gurgling. suggesting exhaust gas pressuring cooling system.

So Tee kay test...and just of the vapor (after draining coolant a bit so it would not go into test chamber and foul readings) coming out og the top of the res, 4 squeezes and she yellow shifted...so..gasket or head crack.

Also fund condensation in EGR valve, but no signs of coolant in sump oil or oil filler cap, nor any soot build up in coolant.

Anyhow, engine still has 25 months warranty or another 31000 Kms on it so now gt to find a way to get it fixed without having to pay to get the car freighted from NSW to WA and back again ( a few grand there at least).

Now in all the time I have owned it, it has never gotten over 3/4 temp on gauge for more than 20 seconds and thats only after ten minutes from cold start before it settled back under half, and then stayed there all day for hot start or constant running, so to my knowledge engine has never kettled or boiled over.

So pretty pissed off atm, and hoping Brunswick has a plan in place to honor warranty for a 27 K install, and another 2K road haul for delivery.

Have spoken with head tech twice now, and he is getting back to me today.

Let us see what happens.

Send an email to Greg sat BD, admin@brunswickdiesels.com.au. Follow up with phone call to Linda or Kerira-lee, explain the situation. Leave it 3 hrs then ring them back, speak with Greg only, the other two guys work for him but they can't make warranty decisions. Detail the exact symptoms and what you have done to reach where you are. Ask Greg where you can take it for an assessment, you need to let him make the decisions rather than make demands, it's simply the way that works with him. I would be wry surprised if he knocks you back because the motor is still under warrany.

Mucked around sacrificing coolant to the coolant gods in the overflow vent, after replacing all cooling system caps, so blanking caps for radiator and 16 PSI pressure cap to expansion tank, and cycling through from warm to cool and refill and repeat over and over (for any air trap removal), as per fault finding instructions from Brunswick, and guess what, no changes, overflow tank still blowing out coolant and coolant does not get hotter than 60 degrees by the laser temp gun on the two tanks.

So pressurization coming from somewhere right:icon_bonk: deptie being told it is unlikely to be a head gasket or a cracked head. So the discussions will continue.

Evidently BD has identified a shop in Blackheath (in the blue mountains) that is happy to work on these 6.5 chevs. so looks like we will be dropping in there eventually.

Quick finger check and receive a nice little 12V finger burn. Checked quickly with voltmeter and accessories running at 10.5V. Switched everything off and found the earth not was loose. Tightened up, back to 12.8, simple things can catch you, pays to do the checks.

Honestly, its a pretty big deal to achieve a glowing joint. You really should reterminate the cable at a minimum. Ideally replace the cable.

I noticed while testing it gets quite hot on the outside, a lot hotter than my small TB oven ever got, but it also gets a lot hotter inside than the small TB. I'll throw the temp gun on it when I go away at easter and see how hot it gets externally. I've thrown a bit of insulation on top of it to shield the Patrol roof a bit, helps stop the oven shaking while I drive as well. My first cook will be a a nice rack of lamb I think on the way out bush at easter.

Current draw was about 19.5 amps with both elements going full bore, no drama's while driving, but need to watch power usage if camped up.

Looked at all the strange home wiring (job for another day). Removed Rear Wheel carrier (Rock Armor) to replace bearings but could not find a replace bearing as not standard Ford/Holden bearings (job for Monday). Cleaning, lots of cleaning. Add to already long list of things to do. oh, and brought a Milford cargo barrier for $70.

Drove it off the road with the starter motor. RACV bloke suggested fuel issues, however I thought it was cranking faster than usual on the starter motor, compression loss?
