What's a 24V hi mount motor worth?

I will use the warn 6hp12v motor on 24v. Will halve the current draw and double the speed and power of the winch. Crazy good.

Winnie
31st August 2014, 12:43 PM
Surely if the speed and power doubles the current draw would stay the same. Half current draw would be same speed and power. Surely?

mudnut

Surely if the speed and power doubles the current draw would stay the same. Half current draw would be same speed and power. Surely?

Electric motors also have induced currents (Generated by the magnetism inside the windings), which oppose the supply current. Higher supply voltages over come these opposing currents to an extent. MR won't quite achieve double speed or power, but it will certainly go a lot better.

MudRunnerTD
31st August 2014, 01:04 PM
It will also draw far less 24v Amps and given the massive increase in Line Speed of the winch the Max Current draw will be less for far less time making a 55amp 24v Alternator plenty of output.

The trade off is an isolated 24v charging and storage system on a 12v Car.

Nearly fixed my TJM OX winch. I had this brainy idea to service the thing a few weeks back. Removed it from the bar, and took the rubber boots off where the cables go to the motor. Rusted to the motor bolts ( I suppose you call them) like you would not believe. Touched the first nut with the spanner and snapped it off. Tried the next bolt and it spun around about half a turn and would go any further. So I got the Dremel out and cut the nuts of so I could remove the leads to the motor. Opened the motor housing up and the copper wire on the back of one bolt had come right off and there was also another copper connector inside there that had also come off due to me trying to undo the bolts. UGH!
I rang about 20 auto elecs and motor rewinding joints to see if I could get these bolts replaced and re-soldered back on. No one would touch it. Most said normal solder wont hold because of the heat the motor will produce. Plus getting copper to stick to steel was near impossible. So out came the Google search engine and found a solution in 10 minutes. Went to my local shop and got some Hi temp silver solder (480c melting point) and some flux and I was on my way. I had some bolts already at home and I did it...wOOt!

Castrol LMM grease is what I have used Mark.
Make sure you silicone it all up when you put it back together and I added a breather to the motor casing to further help prevent water ingress.

why don't you run an air line to it so its pressurized for water crossing, only need an old air horn compressor

I had an extra earth strap put on the long ranger sub tank as suggested by Nissan to fix my transfer issues and it did diddly squat.
Needs to go back again to rectify the problem.

Also got a Redarc 20A in-vehicle 3 stage BC/DC 12v battery charger, and the isolator removed.
To rectify my aux battery charging capacity.

Also an external Anderson plug to keep battery on charge when not in use without opening the hood.

Was found my aux battery tested ok but the main battery was kaput.

Will need to perhaps change aux battery to main and look at maybe an Optima yellow top for the Aux battery.
Not sure yet if I can change it round as the terminals are opposite way around.

All in all, happy with today but was really hoping for a sub tank that transfers fuel.

FNQGU
3rd September 2014, 08:26 PM
You probably already have considered this and I don't know your circumstances, but I reckon you want to carefully weigh up your Aux battery use before choosing a Yellow Top. Yes they are an all-rounder, and if you parallel them to your start battery a lot, then probably a good choice, but there are much better dedicated Aux batteries around depending on need. A/Hrs is not overly high on the Optima range. We use the Yellow Tops a lot at work and they are great, but not for longer term Aux loads like fridges and lights etc... Just a thought.

Next time you undo these nuts, use a couple nuts and lock them at the top of the thread. You can then use a spanner to stop the stud spinning and dragging the copper and insulators with them when you undo the bottom nut.

The bolts only spun because the amount of rust on them. Two of the bolts, the hex on the nuts were completely gone just from corrosion. Just need to find some new boots and I will cover the crap out of them in dielectric grease so they won't rust again.

Where do I start?

The finish is absolute rubbish, like being build by 1st year apprentice. Out of shape, bent, incorrect or outright dodgy hardware supplied, like you need M14 bolts they supply M12, 5/8 bolts have M20 flat washers, 8 mm holes drilled for ally checker plate didn't get holes right so they used M6 bolts with M8 flat washers instead. WTF!
Even the castle nuts for carrier swing arms are out of shape, had to use fencing wire instead of split pins...

Locking pin is missing adjusting nut, pivot is welded crooked so the arm won't align with the locking hole....

Welding spatter powder coated in no worries. The worse think is that bar just wouldn't fit without enlarging the mounting holes way too large so it starts to affect the tensile strength of the brackets.

Those tiny flat washer they supplied bent like banana when just standard ratchet was used, I had to manufacture new washers/spacers out of 10 mm steel plate as the M14x1.5 bolts go all the way to 200 Nm.

Utter Taiwanese/Chinese rubbish.

Keep clear of those dodgy crunts.

Regards

If I had a coin for every time I heard angry words towards these guys, I'd be owning a Y62 by now... They have a local store here, which is always deserted, I walked in once when they opened up, and got NO service at all. I was gonna check out the rear bar too. Am now staying way clear thanks.

Sorry about your dramas but I have one and have had no problems whatsoever, even did 8500 k's on the recent Simpson trip too!

Did you fit it yourself or had someone else do it? Because once fitted and quality issues hidden you unlikely to notice the dramas unless there is a difference between early/late Patrol fits, I'm sure for 05 and later Patrols the fit is just an abomination.

Indeed it was a few encouraging posts about MCC bars which swayed me towards it from next contender Raslaar which was more expensive but also had quality issues and no jacking points.

Pulled my winch apart again. Seems the grease I used is, well, too good for use in a winch. I used a red ultra tack grease used for earthmoving machines. Sticks better than chit to a blanket this stuff. But even not over packing the gears with grease it's way to tacky and the outer hub struggles to slide in the housing. As a waterproof grease I need to use I might try the good old Castrol APXT grease I have here. Now to clean out this red grease from the gears.

had it fitted as part of the deal but i have been under it a few times and looks to be no issues, i did strengthen the mounts by welding two pieces of angle iron so the weight of the 35"s didnt make it sag under constant corrogations, it has taken quite a few knocks but its still good.

I bought a set of black widow drawers out of a 100 series, also came with a cargo barrier (didn't fit which was expected) divider and shelf. Picked up a new cargo barrier early today and fitted the lot. Took all day to my surprise as I expected a couple of hours but getting the holes right and doing up the bolts was harder than expected. Then had to modify the wings to fit in the patrol but overall it worked out great. 1 mistake was I accidenty snapped off a bolt that i didn't end up needing to undo where the tie down point mid way right hand side, hopefully it is not important for anything. Other than that I can't complain as I got them for a steal.

This is the third time I've torn mine up. First at tallarook, completely smashed it and the bracket, and then in the high country few weeks ago, and now wombat had a go at it too... I was just being lazy and re-attaching it to the original, vulnerable spot. This time I'll do a proper job and mount it on the back of the actual main tow bar beam, instead of the thin bracket, so it hangs lower. My tow bar loom also got mangled bad so, I bought a new one from nissan today.

In the case of Catwomens photo I would mount to where the 4 holes were for the tie down point using the female plug mounting points .

Also got the radio going again in my camper, don't ask,

@ mego I'd first check fuse then check plug on the back for squashed wires.

Late edit;;;; pretty sure my AUX battery is dead, bummer, Problem is I don't drive long enough to give the battery a decent charge

I bought a nutsert kit today to make under bonnet modifications so much easier and decided its first use would be to assist after I ripped out all the dodgy spotlight wiring that the previous owner had either installed or worse paid for. The switch wire join was just wrapped and taped, no solder.
I made up a little bracket and mounted two relay plugs for the spotlights and horn relays. In the past I've always just used spade terminals on relays but today is the beginning of a new ease of access and replacement era. (and it was a good opportunity to use the nutsert gun)

Well, wasn't today, but last few days, I fitted a new compact UHF radio, made a custom chassis to fit it into the storage slot hole under the stereo head unit and a bracket to fit the mic without drilling any new holes, came up pretty tidy. I fixed my GQ dash clock for free, and fitted a Narva headlight upgrade kit to replace the original sealed beams. Plus I bought some recovery gear and ordered a battery tray from ARB to install a dual battery kit.

Next will be a wiring loom upgrade for the headlights so I can put in brighter bulbs. I've also got my eye on a roof rack.

Been looking at winches but they're pretty pricey... Anyone got any budget minded options for a while till I can save up some cash? Ebay winches seem cheap, although I can't help wonder if that's for a reason... Or a hand winch for emergencies, any suggestions?

I bought a Tigerz11 12000lb grande for $599 and it hasn't let me down. Its identical to the supercheap ridge rider 12000lb winch that's priced at around $900

Found that you can stop the annoying barn door noise, by adjusting the rubber stop situated at the top latch.

I also used a pry bar and crow bar to lever anything that looks like it could be making the annoying thump near the LH front. I have narrowed it down to the swivel hub bearings or cheap brake pads, but there is only a minute amount of movement (top to bottom) when I tried to wobble the tyre.

Also fitted a new grommet for the bonnet stay rod, so it doesn't feel like it will fall out when I pop the bonnet. Funny how little jobs sometimes produce such great improvements. I also tried to fit my ARB battery tray, but ran into a diff breather line, so that held that project up a bit, maybe tomorrow :-)

Got a bit further with the battery tray. Had to pull out the original diff breather metal line that ran into the guard and re routed it to a el cheap fuel filter on the firewall. Have to come up with a tidier solution later... Next I found the tray fouled on the Aircon pipe, so grinder out and tray is modified. Then had to paint it, so stalled again. Drilled the first two holes for the tray, next gotta check the clearance for the clamp, and drill the next two holes. Slow but steady is my excuse

Put new front and rear rotors on, plus extended braided lines. Since my existing pads were only six months old I though to still use them but the old discs have made them not flat and there is little pad actually touching the disc.:icon_bonk: And she don't stop too well...So now I need to fit new pads again. Also need to get new locking hubs. One of the Nissan hubs was seized and wouldn't turn. I manage to get it apart but stuffed if it will go back together. From my little searching these OEM hubs aren't made to come apart. I have made up a jig so I will have another crack tonight. If not, new hubs too$$$$$$$.
Edit : had a coupla beers and a glass of red and went back out and got the hub together.

mudski
28th October 2014, 08:54 AM
I worked out an easy way of getting the OEM hubs apart and back together. First shot I removed the small spring locking washer when the entire hub components were in the hub. Cleaned it up and had a hell of a time putting it all back together whilst trying to compress the large spring down and hold the top plate down. I needed four hands... I remove the other hub and turned it upside down, with the gears facing towards the bench and gave it a good tap and the entire locking section came out in one piece. So there was no need to pull it apart like I did...
I almost bought some AVM hubs but I don't like the idea of those small screws in the cap as last time two were jammed in so bad, I went through four torx bits before I gave up and just broke the thing off. Maybe if they had some never seize of the tapered section of the screw it would have been a different story...
http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=50846&stc=1

Note. I had already removed the plate that makes these hubs auto a while ago, so now they are just full manual hubs...

Yeah I'd have to agree. I have the same dampener and I still had the wobbles so it doesn't really hide much. What I did though was nip up the wheel bearings a little more than what I usually do and the wobbles have totally gone. Having said that I did change the brake rotors too and I did notice a fair bit of mud and dirt stuck in between the rotor and hub. Maybe this was enough to throw the wheel out of balance....

Nipped over to Lake Burrumbeet this arvo, with the intention to do some walking. Did a bit, but then decided to drive the Patrol round the lake. Deep washouts & potholes saw me having to use low range. However what should have been fun was horrible. *Every* time even the slightest amount of flex occurred the most awful & loud squeaking happened. I had suspected it might, I’ve noticed it occasionally when mounting kerbs etc & thought it was my rubber mounting of the pod when the chassis rails flex a bit. The noise was bad enough to spoil any enjoyment there might have been.

Got home & googled ‘4wd squeaks’ & found all references were to suspension. Went around the greasable shackles with the grease gun - have done this before, don’t forget *all* the suspension (springs - Leaf & coil, shocks & bushes) were new with the GVM upgrade, & not a heck of a lot of miles done since. Also liberally sprayed everywhere around springs & shocks with CRC - & then went for a drive through my local wood.

Came home with a big smile on my dial, the track was tight between trees, with a few deep puddles, plenty of washouts, drops over tree roots etc etc ...... & not a single bloody squeak! It would be nice if it is greasing the shackles which has done the job, but if the squeaks return I at least now know that it’s suspension & not pod related. I know CRC is not the answer, but it’s good to know where the problem lays.
