View Full Version : Freighting 4WD's up to Brisbane

My old man used to do this back when we did Simpson and Fraser Island a lot. Limited time for holidays and freighted the old family truckstar up to Townsville or Cairns, etc.
I am contemplating doing this for the QLD meet up at LCMP. I can't take a whole lot of time off so I'm tempted to freight the GQ up to Brisbane.
Price will obviously be the killer but with limited time off, diesel, wear and tear, a screaming bored 20 month old child in the back of the baby seat for 10 hours x 2 days It's starting to sound cheaper and easier....LMAO
We spend thousands on GMK transport in my day job so I will ask them for a price tomorrow but if anyone else has any inside connections with freight companies and could possibly get a good deal then would love to get some prices on a GQ from any depot in Melbourne up to whatever depot in Brisbane centralish area.
This could be possibly 3 Patrols from Melbourne too if we could swindle a discounted rate on all 3 as well....Same depot and same load.

Some mates & I discuss this on a semi regular basis for trips to cape/kakadu etc
Be aware that lots of freight places will transport your vehicle, but it must be empty. ie. no camping gear, no bags of clothes etc, probably even no baby seat.
Not saying you will find someone, especially if you stumble onto a privateer looking for a backload, but make sure you ask the question.
If you do find a way, let us all know, b/c they'll get some business from my way.

I just rung the guy at the link Kris gave above and has some interesting news...
1 x patrol to freight up Melbourne to Brisbane is $1600...OUCH....But, on the way back will be roughly $700 if we ship 3 cars...Maybe $800 for just the one car.
The guy said the same thing. Most other companies say you can't have anything inside the vehicle as they change carriers quite a lot and items in the vehicle get stolen.
This guy said we can have all the items in the car with only one driver and for $700 It's starting to look possible...They also drop off at someone's house in Brisbane.
Diesel to drive back down would be roughly = $400 maybe?
I have a young family so need 1 night accommodation = $150
Wear and tear in the vehicle
Saving 2 days holidays
$280 for one way flight Brisbane to Melbourne with 2 adults and 1 infant on Saturday 6th OCT at 2:30pm....
Total cost for freight and flights = $980
Total cost for driving = $550-$600 + wear and tear, need 2 days of holidays + a screaming child in the back seat for 2 days....lol
It's possible!!!!!!!
I will try some other places in coming weeks.

At one stage, I even considered flying over and hiring a 4 x 4 (Patrol ute of course) - then again, I drive like grandpa, not like I stole it! lol

Also, I would have to hire a Patrol up there for 5-6 days which would cost around $100 a day (total = $600) if I was to just fly up.

Give Laurenca a call at Rockatoo Transport. (0429925196). We use him to transport gear to and from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. He's pretty reasonable usually and could probably drop off at my work place not far from airport. (mention Nick from Alimak)

Another price which is even better from Affordable Car Carriers...
Melbourne to Capalaba, QLD = $830
Capalaba to Melbourne = $660 <---Good price
Capalaba to my front door = $845

Hi AB, This would be cheaps as chips on the return. as return freight from brisvegas is next to none most of the time but might cost a few bucks to come up.
