Hi,

Iam Aben Dean from Fiji Islands. I have bought a 1999 GU Nissan Patrol with NA TD42 (done 275k kms) its putting out little bit of white smoke at idle. Any idea what it can be?? Doesnt give out white smoke when i rev....however it gives out little bit of black smoke as i rev harder. any help would be appreciated so i know where to begin with - Thanks

Compression?? Cylinder heads??

Over to you Tony ...

I saw one literally yesterday at the mechanics that was blowing white smoke and had done cylinder 3 - are you getting any lack of power and/or response from it?

Meanwhile at the batcave, how about slipping over to the introductions section Aben and posting up some information about you and your rig - no harm done at all mate, but something we ask for as a courtesy and to let people know who they are yapping with - you'll find you get a better response generally also ...

That said - welcome aboard and hope you stick around, great place full of top information and people.

Black smoke is fine under revs its a diesel thing, white at idle however could be steam not a good thing ,would indicate water in the cylinder/s, either head gasket or buggered head

Back to the OP. White smoke can be a problem and you are right to start looking fro reasons. The Black Smoke is a winner mate. It's a Diesel and Black smoke is fuel, no problem at all.

How old is the fuel filter mate? are you in Fiji? what are the chances of this seeing very little servicing in its life? Do a fuel filter change and bleed and you may just have a little air or water in the system?? (outside chance but worth a look)

Ynot may be your man mate and he will be around at some point i am sure.

Hey,,,, Welcome to the forum mate :)

damn...have to see the Diesel specialists i guess! i was thinking of fitting a turbo kit but looks like i will first have to tackle this smoke issue......can be anything small causing it??

Thanks for all the response....that was quick! the guy i bought it off said he did regular servicing. i had two GU's before one was a Nissan Safari TD42T and other was similar to the one a just bought. no had this type of issue. there is no blow back from the oil stick hole......and no other unusual noise, or running problem from the engine. just worried about the white smoke (very light, but visible).

As mudRunner said it could be water in your fuel. there is a water trap on the base of the fuel filter that may need draining and change the filter. Have you got any red dash lights on?

no red lights on.......just checked the radiator water no oil in it, checked oil no water in it. So head or head gasket i doubt should be the case. i will try to drain the water out of the fuel filter and see (if any). its not heavy white smoke but visible if you try to notice it.

Generally a indicator light would come on when the water in the filter is high, but it may not be working, so yeah give it a clean and see what ya get. any chance waters in the tank??

went to a Diesel workshop today. the mechanic there told me that need to service the pump and the injectors. when i hold my throttle at Revs of about 2500 to 3000 the engines jerks a bit and also gives out black smoke. what i noticed this morning is that after running around with the vehicle for about 15mins the white smoke disappeared or went to very minimum and while under heavy acceleration it begun to give out bit of black smoke. should i go ahead with the pump and injector service??

Yes I would mate, if it's missing there is definitely a tuning issue. Can you get the compression checked that may well indicate a problem with the head gasket/head. The white smoke is what concerns me not the black. Blue smoke id be worried about that's burning oil.

ok i will first get the compression checked before giving it for the pump and injector service. btw what readings should i get??

Im not sure mate im on the phone so cant access my manual chuck your questions regarding this here http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/forumdisplay.php?17-Engine-and-Drivetrain as a lot of people dont read the intro section

i called up the diesel services guy again and mentioned that it could be the head / head gasket and he said if that was the case the engine would have run out of water or oil but that's not happening and he said the smoke would have been bluish white and continuous. but he said while servicing the pump n injectors he will do the compression test and give me the data readings. so i have decided to give it a go tomorrow and do the pump / injector service as at 276k kms that would be due anyway.

just updating that after i had the Pump and injectors serviced, the smokes disappeared and gained power as well. both the white and black smoke has gone. Thank GOD it was not anything major. While that was being done, i also managed to change the clutch. sometimes the clutch goes loose and normal again after i release and engage again....is it normal??
