sticky gearbox

we have a 88 patrol ute with a 6.2 chev in it. We are having problems with thw gear shift. We took out the gear lever and the bush and nuckle were ok so the bush selector into the gearbox must be faulty. Looks like a big job jut to get at it. Has anyone done one with out taking the gearbox out?
We are having the patrol wobbles too, have tightened the preload etc now looking at a stiffer damper.
