Hi all

Just looking into various roof racks on the market and have no idea on what type to get. I think I will go for alloy for the weight savings and I may need to take off regularly (once a month or two months).

Can't decide whether to go full rack, roof top tent style or tradesman open ended style. I need something versatile for just about anything and would hate to buy a set and later decide to go roof top tent or something that would need a different set-up.

The idea of the tradesman rack appeals for when I need to carry long pieces or timber or steel (DIY projects from hardware, etc)

The full rack looks pretty cool, but I have heard they create a bit of wind noise and drag to increase fuel consumption (not sure how much by)

The roof top tent types appeal if I were to ever go the roof top tent. Not sure at the moment. I have a camper trailer but am keen to explore further than I am willing to take a trailer.

I do want to install some lights up there also, but not sure whether I will be going for normal style lights or a light bar.

Any advise or opinions would be appreciated, especially from those who have had different set-ups.

Flexability costs money. Rhino platform (http://www.rhinorack.com.au/Vehicle_NISSAN_Patrol_Page_1_System_Pioneer-Platform-42104--R--Gutter-Mount_4634_4047.aspx) with optional rails (http://www.rhinorack.com.au/AccSubCategory_Pioneer-Alloy-Platform-Rail-Options_BarType_610_69.aspx). It's what I've got.

They look good John, with 4 mounts too which is a bonus.

Roof racks are highly competitive at the moment and bargains are to be had for sure.

That might jump up to mid 300's by the end of the auction but still a good buy!

i had a set of these mate, they are pretty solid, yet not too heavy, only got to use them once though as they got knicked 4 weeks after i got em. the welds are nice and the paint job on em not too bad either, its also a plus that its delivered right to your door so no figuring out how to fit them in your rig on the way home. im pretty sure they are an ARB knock off as i have seen some that look similar.

one thing i can suggest if you get these, change the hex head bolts to somthing a little less common, i mean its nice and easy to get em on, which also makes them nice and easy to get off.

Mate i just bought a "wind cheeta" which is a flatbed style that everything bolts to by a tracking system [i love it] we have a tent, awning, roof box, lights, hi-lift, chainsaw, table on slide all mounted to it. There website is www.dolium.com.au

These are EXACTLY what we purchased over Christmas.....http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/FULL-LENG...42006233058374
(different seller, same product, pretty much same price)

Do what we need, very strong frame and powder coated steel, heaps of tie down points.
Dont be suprised if the kit is defficient washers, or has the wrong nuts...mine was missing quite a few, but for the price I paid, I wasn't complaining.

Thanks for the answers guys.

I did wonder if they were worth buying. There only an hours drive from me on the freeway, so I will pick one up and then see how I go putting it on with different size hex heads of course.

Hey mate
Go for the Rhino racks. I was going through the same thing a couple of months back.
I went with the Rhino's because you can do anything you like with them. You can add a cage, attachments for tools and fishing rods etc and alto bang a rooftop tent on top like i have.
Great piece of kit mate
