No thermostat, fuely smell?

Hi guys i bought my 95 4.2 petrol a few months ago and realised that it sat way to cold on the temp gauge. So i think there is no thermostat in the housing also i can squeeze the top radiator hose easily and the fluid moves around. Its always been very fuely and smells of fuel rather bad im guessing cos the computer thinks its in cold mode and pumps the fuel in more?( had this problem with my 5L statesman). Now i have everything i need to do a system flush and change top and bottom hoses and a genuine thermostat.

Now are there any tips on how to go about flushing the cooling system or just drop the bottom hose and put the hose through it? Also i didnt get a thermostat housing gasket will gasket maker silicone work? If this doesnt stop the smell is there aything else i should be checking? injectors? Fuel lines? fuel tank maybe?

Any info would be great

MMMM cant help alot mate but i would also be checking all my fuel lines for possible leaks. ive got a td42 and have just replaced a fuel line thet was seeping very slowly could smell it but not find it until yesterday in 40+ heat

extra fuel from computer makes sence. when i flush i like to put back on the bottom hose no hose clamp, then fill from the top hose then take off bottom hose, drain, and repeat: this dilutes the pockets of coolant left in the block, some say fill with straight water and run till hot but i dont like working over a hot motor. also remember to take off one heater core hose to flush that. gasket goo should be fine mine was like that when i did it, looked original.

This is a copy/paste from thread, trying to understand, hope this helps have a look at it for tools for cleaning.

Has it been cleaned externally, they can be blocked that way to.
It's also worth cleaning the air con unit while rad is out, from rear to front, they can block up also.
I try to on advise from a rad bloke I know, clean/flush my rad cores in reverse with compressed air and water, this causes turbulence.
It helps to break crap out internally and float it out.
pipe adapter with airline fitting put on rad hose, I'll take a pic & post here . It's very crude fitting I knocked up in a hurry with what I had on hand on a Sunday arvo, but hasn't broken so it does the job for now.
Externally I use a tool, that uses water and air, came from supa cheap, to flush also.
let completely dry and respray cores to protect em from the elements.
They are constantly being "sand blasted one might say" so tartup doesn't go astray.
Just don't over do it it with paint , you don't want to insulate the cores.
Been doing this for a few yrs now with no problems.
You may be surprised how much crap comes out externally.
