Hi all, have a 94 GQ that has just decided to not kick over at all and am wondering what the problem migh be! Battery is fully charged and when you turn the key to the 'on' position, it has that little click that has always been there, however, when you turn the key to the start position, nothing happens. There is no sound and no reduction in the lights in the 'ignition' window on the dash. All three lights are on and bright and do not go dull in any way when the key is turned to start.

Had a starter motor issue a while back and replaced it! problem then, was that when you turned the key to the start position, the lights went dull and there was that click, click, click sound.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Sounds electrical, but where do I start? Coil? leads? etc?

Dave

Welcome aboard mate.

When you get a chance drop into our intro section & tell as a bit about yourself & your Rig.

Have you checked your starter relay & fuses yet?

Welcome to the forum mate, it is always a good idea to separate your Introduction from any questions that you have, not everyone reads the Introduction section

Sorry for teh breach of protocol! I would have seperated teh two and provided the Intro seperately, if I could work out how!

Hi Dave and welcome to the forum.

If the engine is not turning over at all when you try to start it can't be a problem with leads or coil.

Your problem will either be the battery, starter motor, ignition switch, inhibitor switch (if its an automatic) or the wiring linking these items.

Do you replace the last starter motor yourself? if so you would of noticed the two wires that connect to the starter motor.

One is a heavy battery cable the other one is wire that is about a 5mm and the colour should be Black with a Yellow trace.

This Black with a Yellow trace wire should have 12 volts in it when you turn the key to start.

You may need someone to help you, get them to hold the key on crank (MAKE SURE VEHICLE IS OUT OF GEAR) while you check if it has 12 volts.

Does it ?, if it does try running a wire from the positive of the battery and connect this to the same terminal of the starter motor that the Black with a Yellow trace connects to (ONCE AGAIN MAKE SURE VEHICLE IS OUT OF GEAR).

This should make the starter motor turn over. does it?

Let us know how you go

I just read your other thread about being stuck on the side of the road.

Try giving the starter motor a good couple of hits with a hammer or back of an axe.

See if this helps.
