I,m in the process of purchasing a GU TD42. It's done 165,000 k's. The RACV report says it has "top end noise" which I'm not familiar with. A patrol mechanic says that half TD42's have a top end noise which cannot be eradicated even with top end rebuilds. Does this sound right? Paps.

Hi paps01.
Can you ring the inspector who did the report and ask him/her? Perhaps ask how loud/bad it was compared with others and what he/she thinks it indicates etc.
Unfortunately I don't have a TD42 - I have a TB42 which needs its tappets done :-)

In the end it turns out to be tappets. So all is well.
