Anyone on here successfully ran an apple app emulator in their android phone?

Mike02Ti

That's a bit like asking if anyone makes a body kit to make a Patrol look like a Hilux.

Now why would someone want to do something like that [emoji12]

Because some companies only release their apps for IOS unfortunately :(

Mike02TiYou could try Cider APK
It runs most IOS apps on most known Android based phones.

Yeh I tried that one before asking but keep getting an error when searching for apps. Don't know if its because its on a spare phone with no sim card and I'm only using wi-fi or not.

I know that Cider is can still be a bit buggy so that could be the issue your having

Same like any root access programs usually trigger the same thing. Disable the virus scanner and install and run. Once its installed run the scanner again and it will usually be clear

Plassy, a bit different, but i wanted total security when travelling so bought a device called 'redbox' which interfaces between my laptop and satellite phone. This device allows you to send emails and browse the internet but blocks all upgrade programs and spam and unwanted traffic, so you get a faster data rate. i wanted it so I could sketch a mudmap or say outline an injury, take a photo, then send it via the redbox and satellite phone. I have used it twice and its bullet proof. If you could get something comparable for a mobile phone it would be great. It wasnt cheap, about $400 from memory, but as long as I can get an iridium signal, i can get out.

A current thread by PB has reminded me of a laptop frustration I experience on a semi-regular basis. 12 months ago I bought a Lenovo Ideapad 510-ISK laptop for use while working away. While I'm away I dont have the luxury of unlimited data like at home, and this absolute POS runs Windows 10 and wants to update apps on a continual basis, chewing my precious data. Dont know how many times I've run dry on data because it updated apps while I was uploading work data. Think ive disabled updates but not 100% sure (it's not a simple process for non-tech heads). I just cant trust this thing that continually wants to talk to me, update shit I don't use on the road and offer me shit I don't want.

Is there a simple operating system I can change to so it turns into a "dumb" computer and just do what its told (basic uploading of reports and photos)?

Or alternative laptops that will just do as told and nothing more?Hey bud, I have done this at work on my laptop there. It's fairly simple and the easiest way is option one.

I read an article on Lifehacker last week titled '40 window apps everyone should own'.
One of the recommendations was The PC Decrapifier, which is described;

"When you buy a new laptop and it's loaded with bloatware -- or you're concerned about the amount of seemingly unnecessary programs on the Windows system you've been using for some time -- install The PC Decrapifier. This incredibly useful utility will give you recommendations, based on other users' experiences, about which items you should keep and which items you should trash. You'll sleep easier knowing you didn't accidentally delete a device-critical application."
https://www.pcdecrapifier.com

I haven't used it personally, so can't vouch for it, but it might get rid of unnessecary programs you have that are chewing up data?

rusty_nail I've just gone into services and found windows update was in manual mode so I must have got it like that some other way. haha dont ask me how I can't remember! Anyway it's now disabled. Frustratingly though, as soon as I disabled it a pop up appeared asking if I was interested in voice activation. Grrrr......

So we finally get the NBN connected today. Supplied was a DLink DVA2800 router. Every laptop and mobile device in the house see's the new wifi signal. Except one laptop. I connected this laptop via ethernet and it wont even connect this way too. Yet the other two laptops here do.
So I will assume its the laptop that is the issue. Its a W10 laptop, all Windows updates are done. I'm thinking its a firewall issue but not sure. I dont run A/v so its not this. I've turned the wifi on and off multiple times with no success too. Just not real sure where else to look.
Any ideas?

Also. This laptop is currently running of the wifi signal from a different router which is our ADSL2 connection...

most likely answer will be the modem is only broadcasting on 5ghz, and the bad lappy is only 2.4ghz compatible. call me and i can work through it with you.

The modem broadcasts on both. I turned off the 5ghz option just in case and still nothing. Ethernet wont even work. Fecking computers.

perhaps run though the model(lenovo, samsung, ibm etc) wifi utility? is that how its connected? im sure it would just be something simple?

another suggestion would be you could turn off the DHCP on the old modem then pug that modem into the new modem. then the old lappy would use the old modem signal with the new modem as DHCP. would be a good permamant solution or temporary solution what ever suits your needs

This may also be a symptom of the type of certificate being used. A while back a lot of browsers and operating systems disabled early versions of TLS as they were found to be insecure.

get a new ISP guys,

the non major ISPs are not regulated by the same restrictions as the major... 5? i think it is? My ISP is spintel, i can log straight onto TPB, RARBG, EzTV and YTS, and all other sites for that matter and that is without a VPN.

Yeah Ive never had issues with my ISP, iiNet for 10 years, until now. From what I understand the federal grubbers are enforcing this, moreso as of late, and going through each ISP one by one. Even though, the mods I found that you add to the Firefox web browser also make your history invisible to your ISP. Plus I dont need to change ISP's.

The problem is likely in your video drivers, delete your drivers and re install them or try updating them

Are you using windows chrome?

Try using a different browser also and see if it still happens

Yeah mate, whatever button it requests, could be f2, F10 or delete, sometimes there is a dedicated button like on some Lenovo's. If it isn't going into bios then you may have some luck, that's more likely a bad module on your ram stick. I'm sure you have tried but try repeatedly pushing the bios button until you "miss" the bios screen.

To troubleshoot bad ram, open up the bottom cover which houses the ram, if there are two sticks then your in luck. Try one stick only at first, if no good move it to the other slot. If still no good repeat above with second stick. Fingers crossed this is your issue

Guys,
I have a compact PC running WIN10. I have three (3) two TB solid state portable hard drives plugged in to USB ports. I use these for saving all files, only the OS is on the in-built hard drive. If find this a safe guard & portable option for saving everything should the PC or internal drive crash. Recently the PC, when started, instead of going to the desktop, now opens the menu on all the "plugged in" hard drives. This is happening 9 out of 10 times.

Any ideas why, and how to stop this happening? I think it may have started after the most recent auto OS upgrade.

Do you mean it goes into the menu of the hardrives in windows? As in.. into the file manager screen? If so it's a windows thing. Remembers your most clicked on or opened screens and automatically opens it for you. You can turn it off.

Fyi you can install internal hardrives which is basically the same as having external ones except you'll usually benefit from a faster transfer rate. You can still just take them out and put them in the next computer should your os hdd die.

It opens all three HD's. Example : one drive is only photos. It open all folders and shows all pics in view mode. Same with the files on the other two drives. This means I need to close all three drives to get back to the desktop screen.

As for installing them, they all won't fit in my compact PC and it also negates their option of quick & easy portability.

Hey if it meets your needs then have at it. I just find usb hdds can be a bit slow with mass data storage at times.

Go to "Personalisation" settings and "start" click on "choose which folders appear on start" make sure "file explorer is in the off position"

It's something like that. I'm not at my computer to check it for you(because I'm in Bali :) ) but it's in there somewhere.

Guys,
I have a compact PC running WIN10.

Sounds like a feature re-introduced in W10 (PCs used to do this ages ago).

I remembers what yo had open at shut down and automatically launches those programs for you at startup.

Try closing all open windows / programs / apps before you shut down.

Shut down and startup again and see if the windows re-open upon startup. I strongly suspect it's this.

They all just delving deeper deeper into your lives. I'm not on facebook, linkedin, instagram or any other "social" network, but do subscribe to microsoft for their programs, if thats what you call them.

Is there any way for someone like me to stay anonomous online, but connected to regular microsoft programs?

What if I gave up my monthly automatic microsoft subscription and just bought a microsoft cd from officeworks, would that shield me from the continuous online updates and surveillance?

Yes I know that might cost a bomb up front compared to my $18/month or thereabouts, but might that stop me getting heavily bombarded with updates and intruisive programs I don't know how to handle?

All I want is a simple operating system that doesn't track or shadow me or change things or try to sign me up to systems I don't want.

Is that possibls these days?

You may be interested in Chromebooks? They need to have Internet access as they rely on being online. I don't have any 1st hand experience with them, but you may find them useful.

Unfortunately we live in a Windows world.

Only way is to stick with an older version of Office matey, office 2013 being the last one that didn't need subscription I believe. You don't really miss out on much, most of the update features aren't shit you would likely use anyway?

Unfortunately we live in a Windows world.Used to work in a school, seen a few kids with the Chromebooks. My biggest issue with them is they are usually quite low spec'd and therefore would only expect to get max 2-3 years put of them if you want to stay current with programs etc. They are still an option but I don't really believe Google's os offering is comparable to windows or Mac OS's

If you don't have a white collar business need for Office then It's very hard to suggest that anyone use anything other than the free offerings from Microsoft and Google.
Both companies offer free online versions of word processor, spreadsheet, presentation apps that are very good.

It's what I'll use when I get out of my current line of work.

Here's the link to Microsoft's instructions on how to uninstall the two components to remove teams.
I just did this on Thursday. It's more persistent than a virus.
https://support.office.com/en-us/article/uninstall-microsoft-teams-3b159754-3c26-4952-abe7-57d27f5f4c81

BTW, I didn't have 'teams machine-wide installer' in my application list to uninstall, so I ran this PowerShell script that removed the files that were installing teams on every reboot.
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftteams/scripts/powershell-script-teams-deployment-clean-up

Well I disabled Microsoft Teams per Rusty's link, and then uninstalled the program per Crem's first link and guess what? It popped up again when I fired the PC up today. Went into Programs and Features and there it was sitting there again! Uninstalled it again so who knows, it'll probably be back tomorrow.

Just read this article mate and I have some questions: https://www.pcworld.com/article/2026703/office-365-vs-office-2013-should-you-rent-or-own-.html

If I cancelled my subscription and bought Office 2013, would I lose all my emails stored on Outlook and would I still be able to access emails on my phone?

It depends on which subscription you have. Have you looked at the free web based Word, Excel etc offerings from MS? I'd look at that before you go spending any more money, it may work for you.

The trick is to acquire something new before you cancel your sub. Get everything moved across into your new apps, backed up and then unsub the old stuff.

I just switched from Office 365 Business Premium to Business Essentials and lost nothing.

If you unsub from your current plan, what will you move to? If you don't stay with Exchange Online you'll lose yr email and if you don't keep Outlook any exposrt to PST you do to back up yr email will be unreadable by any other email app.

Your not stuffed, just need to put a plan together.

Do you have 300GB of photos that you cannot live without on Onedrive?

You should not lose any emails as they are most likely stored on a central server that your desktop and phone booth access (when you read an email on one of those devices you should see it becomes marked as read when you look on the other device).
The best thing to do is call Microsoft support and ask them about you concerns. If you are paying a subscription, you are paying for support too! ;)

https://partner.support.services.microsoft.com/en-au/contactus/office/tech-services/

They will even call you so you don't have to wait on hold.

The easiest way to stop it appearing is to log into Teams when it pops up, using your office credentials and then go to options and uncheck the "auto start application" box.

Is the extra ram you added compatible? How many ram slots does the computer have, if it's 4 slots have you tried the ram in slots 1 and 3? I usually find its best to stick wih the ram in matched pairs. Yes it can work if they aren't identical but it can also cause issues. Computers shouldn't come with less than 8gb these days, 4gb is barely cutting it. Do you know what the motherboards max ram capacity is? You might be better just upgrading to a single 8gb stick.

With DDR3 the ram will just reduce the clock speed of the fastest ram to match the slower ram. It's much more likely this is software or (as you stated) motherboard related.

Also, his laptop is most likely to have only two slots, I'm yet to see a laptop with more than two slots in 10 years of operating them

I'd assume if its a new laptop it will have DDR4, and while not likely to have 4 slots with only 4gb of ram as standard, there are plenty of high end and gaming laptops with 4 slots. A Dell Precison 7540 is one example, up to 128Gb of ram in 4 x 32gb slots.

The i5-2410M processor supports a 64gb operating system, so yes if you upgrade to 64 bit windows 10 it will support the additional ram. The best bang for buck upgrade you can do is to upgrade to an SSD, I'm not sure if your motherboard supports it though, I'd need the full model name to check.
Sometimes it's just not worth upgrading older computers.

Any good tips for installing a new Windows 10?I tried upgrading from my original Windows 7, but it didn't work.

Doing that on a bunch of old W7 PCs ATM, currently on a PC that failed an inplace upgrade. This is what I've done so far:

Uninstalled all old programs that are no longer needed
Deleted old userprofiles
Ran Windows Disk Cleanup and removed all the crap it saw
Removed all USB devs except kbd and mouse
Upgraded BIOS
Upgraded Video driver
Upgraded various other drivers

Over the years I've found if you upgrade video drivers and/or BIOS upgrades usually go ahead, provided that the PC is physically capable of being upgraded.

Did you get an error code / message??

Can't i ask problem about computer here? I am going to switch to Windows 10,or install it on my computer.

I think the main problem is you're using W10. You'd be better off with a 15w-40

Hahaha.

But seriously, suspecting you're upgrading from W7, download the Windows 10 media creation tool (google it). Select the option to do a clean install/remove all files and programs.

Then fit a dawes and needle valve, you won't look back.

First world problem advanced warning.

Recently bought a new phone. Im not a brand whore or latest tech guru. Just something that does the basics well does me. Anyway I had an LG phone that cost about $250 maybe 3 years ago and it was a ripper. Great camera (important for work), easy to use and good speed (CPU?). Phone gets flogged (use it for work photos constantly, gets dropped here and there, constantly using work apps). Gets sweated on, rained on etc. It took everything I gave it. Anyway a little while ago the ear speaker died so had to have it on loud speaker to use it so I bought another phone. This time a Nokia. Bloody thing is slow as piss, terrible camera and is constantluy, and I mean constantly, updating background apps. Did a system update and next day wants to do another system update. Tonight tried taking a picture (just a general at-home picture) and I dont know if it didn't like the light, but wouldn't take a pic. I threw it but sense prevailed and it bounced harmlessly off the couch. Anyway, can someone tell me if there's a good phone out there that doesn't cost what gen now kids spend on phones. Unlocked. Reliable and not a freaking pain in the absolute arse.

Hi Mate, did you keep the old phone with the broken ear speaker???

I bought an unlocked 2nd hand Galaxy S5 from cash converters for $180 in as new condition.

I like the S5 because it's waterproof and has a replaceable battery. The batteries do wear out after a year or so. A common complaint from high end phone consumers is that after a couple of years it's no longer holding charge .... so they need to upgrade to another $1500 phone

You can actually get rebuild kits from ebay for around $50 with a replacement battery and the special tools required to dismantle the phone, often it involves heating the phone up gently to unstick the glue which holds it together and then prying it apart with thin pick tools. It can be done, if you're determined. My mother has replaced the battery in her iphone 3 times.

Thanks mate. Yeah I tend to buy phones that you can replace batteries too. Dont like being sucked in to sealed units where you either have to become a phone mechanic as you said, or just replace after a year or two.

Nokia 2.2 mate. Makes a reasonable paperweight. For sure mate, that's very lowbrow. If buying a Nokia I would have said the 5.1 would the the lowest I would go, I had seen them at aldi for $200 a while back. So are you looking for another phone? Or just trying to fix your paper weight? Sorry if you've said so, I've just briefly read about your issues.

Has anybody ever had luck in retrieving files from a corrupt SD card? The Micro SD card from my phone shat itself and the phone won't recognise it. I connected it directly to my computer and it shows that the drive is there but with no files. I've tried a couple of file retrieval programs and they both recognised it as a "lost partition" but neither of them could find my files after doing a long scan.
I stupidly did not have them backed up and it looks like I am going to lose 10 years worth of photos!

EDIT: I'm fairly sure the files are still there, these programs recognised that there was approx 30Gb of data written on the card.

I found the free retrieval programs don’t work well. Once I had to pay to get my external HDD retrieved and got 99.4%of my data back for 100 bucks.
Now everything in on google cloud storage mate. Cheap as chips[emoji106]

Amd is better value for money, and in generally find on par with Intel, Intel give marginally better performance for a significant price increase.

Nuffy Older B’s may need a bit of techy advice please if anyone has some ideas to help get Telstra’s arse into gear top folks!

16 & 10 YO Littlens are trying their best to remotely home school here on the locality borders of Stage 3/4 Victorian lockdown.

Our girls struggle to Webex login to their high/primary school groups at the same times and it’s really starting to affect their focus.

Telstra’s response:

“I'm afraid ADSL does not really offer much speed. It's only upto 25mbps. I'm afraid I never heard anything about Telstra reducing the speed. We provide the max speed as much as possible on the area for adsl. Speedboost does not work on adsl too. As much as we would like to provide a better technology there, NBn is now government mandated however, there's no timeframe on your area yet on when it's going to be available. You may also try to apply directly to NBN . “

The reply did go on further with suggestions of ‘mobile broadband’ although here is a quick ‘speed test’ off my phone here at its 3G peak:

I understand that our Networks (if that’s what it’s called) are coping a flogging these days but if I climb to the top of our hill I can see Melbourne’s Eureka Towers lights off in the distance!

Is there Satellite options available these days for remote outback schooling Australian’s ?

Hey MB. The education department are offering all students, either a device to use to work on, eg an iPad, or a device to connect to the internet, eg: SIM card, or a device that can be setup as a hotspot, or both, eg: an iPad with a SIM card.

Your phone's internet connection photo didn't look promising, but you should approach the school and see if they can supply you with something. I'd tell them you don't have a working internet connection & need something for your kids, they should provide you with something.

NBN fixed wireless can be good. We have it and it's pretty good, but we live in a rural area so our NBN tower doesn't get alot of traffic.

Think of fixed wireless as you do with how your phone internet works, it's fundamentally the same idea, an antenna on your roof talks to an NBN tower, just like your phone talks to a 4G tower.

I'm involved with the Dept of Ed stuff so if you need some help or info, PM me and I'll do what I can to help.

As suggested have you tried a different mouse? You shouldn't need to update any drivers mouse drivers are mostly standard unless you have a fancy gaming mouse which I doubt. How did you update them? Are you using some sort of driver update helper program? They generally contain malware or spyware which could be the root of your problem. Let me know

I went into Device manager, selected the mouse, right click, selected Update Driver Software. But there was no update it could recommend.

Guess what, I've got another mouse in the house. How 'bout I give that a crack?? Derrr...

I've tried Tapa, but don't really like it, so on my phone I still use the 'full site' option. A bit cumbersome at times, but I know my way around it. My phone is not a big one (iPhone XS) & I manage. Hardest is editing posts, so if I do one of my 'long' posts, I still grab the laptop.

Greetings, oh Wise Ones. I installed software for my Sigma lens yesterday, and the forum has frozen twice today.

For a very long time, the computer also has a nasty habit of making the screen go black for a few seconds, especially if I open a new page. If I move the cursor it comes back, but sometimes goes black within seconds, until I move the cursor again.

Can anybody recommend a good phone that doesn't cost an arm and leg? I need a good rear camera (front selfie camera specs not important), a sub-6" screen, replaceable battery, unlocked and good android functionality. Until recently I had an LG but I wore it out literally over about 4 years constant use. Great phone. I then bought a Nokia piece of crap I ditched after 2 weeks, and now an LG Q7 piece of absolute operating system crappola. Getting very frustrated. Surely there's something decent out there that doesn't cost a fortune?

Question: Can an apple iphone be plugged into a PC to transfer photos?
Reason: I've been a satisfied android user until the last few years when I stupidly thought I could get adequate service from a cheap (low $200s) phone. Nope, so bought another. Nope again so bought another. Now I've got 3 sh1t phones when I could have bought a decent one! I used to have a work-issued iphone and it gave me no problems so now thinking of crossing back to the dark side. Iphone SE is $679 with specs that will do me fine, I think.

Hence my question. Can I transfer pics from the iphone to a PC easily? Just plug and play or is it a bit more of a hassle?

FULL Tech Answer: Yes Plassy Mate, iTuneys required though on top of your desk which in its self can cause issues.
SMALL Outback Tip: Sucks when off grid and trying to access your devices already downloaded track maps and icrapple decides it’s time to connect to iTuneys for an update before seeing what you already own, guessing the same for music/photos too?
TIP: Always carry backup Paper Maps [emoji23][emoji106][emoji106]

If I have to deal with itunes its a deal breaker. Has to be plug and play direct between devices. I don't do elec maps only paper ones (Old Skool mate haha!). Only asking about photo transfer which is important to me.

Transferring photos to a PC from an iphone should be as easy as running a usb cable to the PC from the iphone & having the PC treat the iphone as USB stick.

It could have been something you did accidental, but your PC could also be compromised. Personally things like that would be reason enough for me to burn it all and start again. (Or roll back to a backup from pre-CZ)

Also, adblock+ and ublock origin are available as chrome add-ons. Other browsers should have similar (except probably microsoft)
Personally recommend Chromium (not chrome), Vivaldi, Brave or Opera, as alternate and better browsers.

Not a silly idea. NordVPN is a minimal cost for the security benefit.
If you have a teenager, or an IT department, you could probably set up a PC at home/office that acts as your own private VPN and not have to pay for the service.

Easier to do it from the modem, but a VPN won't protect you from anything, just from filtering at the ISP level, as it creates a private tunnel to the www that the ISP doesn't monitor. Won't stop spam and won't stop malicious attacks either.

I've got the Deco M5 units and have one in my garage. The only problem I've found is that they create a WiFi network that is on a different subnet to the main network, so I have trouble accessing network accessible storage wirelessly on my LAN (local area network).
All other internet functionality is great and they have a mobile app to manage the Deco units.

I'm thoroughly opposed to wifi for several reasons. Security is one of them.
AKA, anyone can drop a cellphone sized PC within your broadcast radius and over the course of a few hours (less or more, depending on usage) crack your network.
The effect of EMF on the human body is another biggun.

And if you've ever watched the terminator, or have any thinking on AI....https://www.tomshardware.com/news/wi-fi-routers-used-to-detect-human-locations-poses-within-a-room

Even EoP (ethernet over power) is potentially subject to ripple/trigger currents sent by your electricity network.

I would recommend running LAN cable or multi-mode fibre, then at least you "own" and control the data and interconnects on your side of the boundary.

About network hacking, I agree with you. What do you mean about EMF? I think this situation was described in a Johnny Mnemonic (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Mnemonic_(film)) film. But it's just a film, there's no scientific data on the harm of such small magnetic fields.

Try either of these:
Open Safari.
Open a new tab by tapping + in the lower left corner of the screen.
This will open a new tab showing my Favorites.
One of my Favorites may be labeled Saved Tabs.
Tap Saved Tabs, and it could reveal your missing tabs. Then you can tap each tab to reopen it.

Or

You can also access closed tabs on Safari for iOS through the History menu. Tap on the 'Bookmarks' button located at the bottom of the screen, select 'History,' then 'Recently Closed Tabs. ' From here, you can reopen any closed tabs.

...but, disclaimer. I am an Android and PC user and I feel that Apple preaches ease of use, however doing what you want on their platforms is never simple or easy.

I tried looking at the forum on a desktop PC the other day and I too had the layout appear really fractured, like the site was missing its CSS (Cascading Style Sheets).

Should have contacted Paul from LED Light Co. AKA Lights. He does all that stuff.
