OK wise gurus..... I have installed VLC and just been having a play. Just a quick question: I have the laptop sound turned up, and the VLC sound turned up but its still really quiet. Is there anything else that can be done? Is it more likely how its been downloaded?
keeping in mind that i havent put any drivers back on since the install.

My laptop is usually quieter than than others though.

I think I remember you saying your lapto was the same as mine. I use VLC and it's plenty loud enough, but if you scroll by using 2 fingers on the touch pad you can boost the volume to something like 400%

taslucas
3rd December 2013, 09:37 PM
yeah its always been fairly quiet. i thought there may be some hidden setting deep down that i have missed.

i'll give the two finger stroke a go......

Yeah just a little different to what we practice last time. Don't gotta caress it so much.

yes thats correct, thats because you havent installed the utility for the trackpad. its really important you go through and install all the important drivers and utilities. the important ones are(and i remember you downloaded a ton so look out for these):

chipset driver, audio driver, trackpad/mouse/touchpad driver, graphics driver, bluetooth driver, WIFI driver, webcam driver, cardreader driver, LAN driver, USB 3.0 driver(if your comp has USB 3.0)

windows only comes with a set of generic drivers which work OK with most devices but not good with all of them which is probably why you are getting sound but only quiet sound. so its really important you apply all those drivers to your computer.

now one thing to note, you did say you downloaded a ton of drivers, i suggest you go back and re-download the drivers i have mentioned above, keep them seperate from the other ones and install those. you need to be aware that when you are picking drivers there will probably be several versions(win XP, Win 7, Win 8, ETC) make sure you only download the version that is relevant to you.

just text me if you have any problems mate.

taslucas
4th December 2013, 08:41 AM
Yeah cool, I figured that it was working so I didnt need to install drivers but yep it makes sense that Windows comes with generic ones.
The drivers I downloaded were all from the HP site and specifically for my laptop running windows 7. So they should be right?

nope lol, cos there would have been 2 types of drivers, one for x64 and one for x86 (64 and 32 bit) sorry to be a pain. think of the windows drivers as the tigerz11 of the computer world hahaha

taslucas
4th December 2013, 09:18 AM
When I went onto the HP site I entered the product id, serial number etc of my laptop so it knew exactly what drivers were compatible to my system. (Windows version, processor, etc etc).
But it's no drama to get the drivers you suggested above so I'll just do that. Do you have a preferred site?

I keep getting confused and/or forgetting if I'm x64 or x86. Im pretty sure im x64.

How do I find out if I've got USB 3?

see pics for how to work out if x64 or x86. as for USB 3.0, the (inside) of the USB port is usually blue instead of black or white.

as for where to get the drivers, it definately has to come from the HP site, or there may be spyware contained in "aftermarket" drivers.

ok, most the drivers seemed to install fine but;

1. The bluetooth driver kept saying that "device needs to be turned on".

2. There were 3 different drivers refering to wireless. Atheros 2011 wireless LAN, Intel Pro/wireless, Broadcom wireless. I just put them all on. Is this bad?

I think the sound may be louder now when watching youtube or playing music but its still quiet when trying to watch the vids off the usb stick. I reckon it must have been put on the quietly lol

taslucas
4th December 2013, 08:22 PM
FFS!!!
All I did was put a few of those drivers on them test the video playback and it was fine (but not much louder).
I just sat down to watch a vid off the stick and now it's glitching and freezing and the sound is all twisted! What the f&ck!? Ive done nothing to it since I tested it after putting the drivers on!

I was on battery power when I wrote the above. It went a bit better when I plugged it in.

Just played with the power settings and put them up to high quality instead of power save and it seems to be working now. Could this be the solution?

Kwarte
4th December 2013, 10:20 PM
Easily could be as the processor speed on most laptops will actually drop while on power save mode. Try running the video not full screen if you are not running on power and it "should" play OK.

ive had a play with the processor power settings and it seems all good now. It was set at %50 processor when on battery. ive now set it to %98 both plugged in and on battery.

Not sure if anyone would even know the answer but anyways...

At the expo coming up I would like to run a big laptop running the you4wd map to show people at the show how it all works.

I will be connecting it to the wireless 4G to get internet access.

My concern is being in an area with 100,000 people that the internet will not work?

If you remember when you go to the footy or a rock concert with thousands of people the phone and 3G sometimes doesnt work due to the amount of devices trying to connect in a small space.

Would I be right in assuming the 4G wireless modem will be better then everyone's phones and will work ok?

Mate its not about 3g or 4g etc. If the tower is full of clients then access will be hampered. There isn't really any way around it, what I can suggest is have two different service providers like Telstra and optus.

Generally expo centres and show grounds have very high 4g capacity available.
I was at the Melbourne expo centre for work last year and even though they had multiple events on I still had the best 4g speed I have had anyware.

Wish they could do the same at the MCG.....3/4G coverage is rubbish there when there is a game on.

AB, you should investigate whether exhibitors have access to a WiFi network at the show. I would be very surprised if there wasn't one available.

Thought about making a video??? Time consuming I know but would solve any issues of having no signal

Thats a good idea. Make a ten minute vid and just loop it on replay. Whilst also having the actual program there just incase it does work then you can show people how it works....

AB

I have the screen recorder at work and could do a tutorial on how it works and pick good vids to put on place marks to show etc. show to use the site and how to upload videos etc.

Right so the clock on my laptop was two hours fast after reinstalling windows. I finally decided to fix it this morning. The time zone was set to USA somewhere so easy fix I thought..... I put the time zone to Hobart but that's 5 hours fast???? I tried other aussie cities and they were all fast. Wtf is going on? Have I been off work that long that I don't know what time is anymore!? rusty_nail

yeah automatic but it doesnt happen immediately. see below pics for where to go;

Click the Clock and click Change time and date settings…
Under the Internet Time tab, click Change Settings

Check Synchronize time with an Internet time server. I chose to use the default windows.time.com, click Update now, and click OK

thats not entirely true mate, but your on the right track. the OS will confer with the BIOS regarding date and time, but inevitably it will look for an actual time server. there should be no reason why lucas's BIOS time would be different, when we helped him through the fresh install of his OS the BIOS battery wasnt removed, infact most computer bios batteries are soldered in as they should never be removed.

Yeah I couldn't remember if you guys had him remove the bios battery when he did this a while back. But. In all the laptops and especially desktops I have built i have never seen a battery soldiered in. But theres a first for everything. I just threw out half a dozen laptop mobo's in a massive cupboard clean out and none of them had soldered batteries.

Hodge
14th May 2014, 05:57 PM
Yup agree on what mudski said. I've gone through more mobos than undies (desktop ones) and never seen a perma-fitted or soldered battery. They're meant to be removable for BIOS reset. Some newer mobos now have a button, to short out and reset the BIOS, but even they have the battery slotted not soldered.

Whats rusty said was spot on, it should sync with the server, but I have seen it be out even when synced.

44529 44528 44527

there are three examples different computers with a permanantly attached battery. the reason they are permanantly attached hodge is to prevent that exact thing. laptop computers are easy to steal, locking down a BIOS with a password is a deterrent to prevent the thief being able to use the device. another application would be in an enterprise situation where users of the device (such as at my school) do not need access to the BIOS and if they were to try remove the battery they would have to cut it permanantly.

Have a muck around in the test section mate, there's a few different options and I think you can keep them almost the original size in some cases.

Download the file and then use WINRAR or WINZIP to uncompress it

EDIT: I think win 8 has its own unzipper:)

If so, check your PM. I have downloaded the ZIP file and have created a self extracting file from it for you.

Just a note for everyone.

WinZip is no longer free. You can get a 30 day free trial version but to use all of the features, you have to buy it. http://www.winzip.com/win/en/landing/winzip-feature-comparison.html#sub-nav

WinRAR on the other hand is free. and will do the same thing as winzip. http://www.win-rar.com/start.html?&L=0

If you just want to compress files or folders into a single "ZIP" file, then Windows 7 and Windows 8 has native support for this function. You don't need to install WinZip or WinRAR. All you have to do is right click on the file or folder you wish to compress and choose "Send to>Compressed (zipped) Folder" from the menu. You can also unpack zipped files and folders this way.

Rob

Just go to oldapps.com and get the older version of your favorite program...I still use a version back from 2005 or there abouts. Albeit a cracked full version. I find a lot of new software is bloated with adds, and programs that will want to instal without your knowing, or consent.
Like uTorrent. They are up to 3.4.2. I'm still on 1.82 from 10 years ago.

Be careful mudski. These sites often repackage programs and you think you are installing a particular application but they often hide malware (and other nasties) within the installer and you wont know anything about it.

I would not trust any application unless it comes directly from the vendor.

Yes some sites do. Though any half decent A/V program will pick this up. Also most of the vendor sites these days have hidden adds and unwanted extras that will also install with their program because they get paid from other sites for this. Many novices will get caught out with this when installing as they will just click o.k for everything during the installation process without reading first. Having said that one needs to be careful from any site. I have used oldapps for many programs and never had an issue, but there is a first time for everything they say.

If you have Winzip installed you should see some very similar to this when you right click on the file you need to uncompress. The three above Winzip are the Winrar program. Winzip will have the small black arrow to the right of Winzip, Hover your cursor over that and then the second window will appear, like in the picture. If you select extract to, it will then ask you where you want to extract the files, e.g to your desktop Or you can extract them into the same folder where the zipped file is. There is other options as you can see but they are the two easiest options.

Righto mudnut. Time for some magic. All you needed to do with the file I sent you was to rename it to an EXE extension and then run the file but obviously something else is going on that you cant work out or is stopping you from extracting the files.

So, what are you doing tomorrow say around the 9pm mark? If you are online I can remote control your PC and take a look.

I'm seriously looking at installing a roof mount dvd player in the patrol for those long trips.
One question I have however is the wireless headphones.

Now if one set of headphones go walking or break..... How hard would it be to replace them?
Could I grab any old ir set or would I need these expect units

hey mudnut, take a look down the bottom right of your computer near the speaker and take a screenshot and upload it here please. humor me, i reckon you have a virus.

FYI, any anti virus is essentially useless once a person uses the computer.... i know it may sound stupid but the minute a person( who has full control over the computer) anti virus programs can warn you and do their best to steer you clear of viruses BUT at the end of the day, defending against viruses is up to the user. i run no anti virus on my home computer, i have never got anything malicious on my computer because everytime i click my mouse i know exactly what i am clicking.

now there are people on here who disagree with my thoughts but it works for me, and everyone else who i have educated on responsible computer use.

so anyway, take a screen shot of you system tray and well take it from there, ill keep an eye on this thread till we get you sorted

Get a program called MalwareBytes. Bloody good program. I haven't used any A/V for years now, well I have but it hasn't updated since 2007, lol, and only use Malwarebytes on the odd occasion. But it all depends on what kind of sites you look at too I suppose.
Malwarebytes is great for removing those browser hijackers and alike. but you need to create a system restore point before doing so. As sometimes it will remove that much junk, your pc won't be used to it and refuse to boot.

Ex-farkin-actly !!
If an add, says "Your IP has been selected for a free iPhone", well duh! DO the maths... Don't click on it. And they are getting very clever, when it comes to hiding these adds, and some are incredibly personalized. Like for example if you've been browsing eBay for GU parts, you will see random adds, across some other websites, completely unrelated to eBay OR Patrols, advertising, GU parts! More often then not, these are just popups, spelling trouble.

I'm over getting customers back (building PC's is kind of a second job for me), with a completely bloated systems, just riddled with crap installed by them simply clicking random useless junk.

I've been using Windows 7 with the free Microsoft Security Essentials from day 1. And have not had a SINGLE virus or infestation of any type. All due to not clicking on stuff like " FREE scan system optimizer" etc etc...

Yeah I used to do the same a few years back. Had a good customer base, mostly elderly toward the end.
But got sick of getting 30 calls a day and trying to explain to them where the power button was.
Then there was the gaming pc builds for say a customers teenage son. You'd get a call saying the pc wont turn on anymore and you'd find three inches of dust in the thing, so it was overheating. Or it was plagued with viruses because of the porn sites they'd been in. Funniest is asking them about those sites and they deny the lot.

hey kat i missed this. so build quality, i think asus make the best laptops on the market, although they are more upmarket and therefore more expensive. a more mid range computer that i think would suit someone like yourself would be the Toshiba Z30.

also, did you know that Amazon US do international shipping now? i havent been able to find a cheaper place to buy even after shipping but if you want to buy local JBHiFi are usually cheaper than most. DONT go to Harvey Norman, they are a rip off.

Like Kris said, dont go looking for a particular model, go looking for a list of specs and make sure that the computer meets these specs:

Minimum Requirements:

1TB HDD
8GB Ram
Intel i5 Processor or AMD equivalent.

anything with those 3 specs will be a fairly decent computer and should last you around the next 4-5 years

Open 'settings'-

open 'location and security'-

open 'select device administrators'

here you will see Mcafee listed, uncheck the square box in front of it. Close all of it and now uninstall Mcafee like any other application.

actually todd, my minimum is correct, your specs would be the "Recommended" specs, although i wouldn't recommend an i7 processor if you want to get decent battery life, they chew through the power. i5 are much more reasonably spec'd for laptop use

yeah i was more talkign about room for more HDDs, you can only have so many external, a laptop would look ridiculous with 7external HDDs coming out of it lol, also im not a fan of touchpads, they arent efficient enough.

I actually agree when it comes to a laptop the size like mine and I was hoping the insurance company would pay me out so I could get a better desktop because of the exact same thoughts.

But I do on occasions like to sit out on the back deck and use the laptop which I could never do with a desktop and I'm sure if I was to invest a little money I could customise my current desktop to how I want it

My plan was to run a network from the lappy to one of my sh!tty PC's with all my HDD's in that, well that was the plan, then microsoft came along and made connecting 2 PC's impossible for the average bloke to set up :(

W7 Ultimate....shark007 is loaded with every codec under the sun and half never worked. Been there.... Using Haali, Matroska splitter and ffd show. IIRC. Tried shark007 and it was impossible to make 1080P MKV play smooth. I recently bought a new and faster SSD for it. Just gotta get off my rrss and reinstall Windo$e on it. As it used to play really well, except for one movie that I downloaded. Avatar. But that was a 29Gb file and it jumps around. Now its jumping around a lot now and I can't put my finger on the cause. The network or the HTPC.
I really would like to run a micro server, rather than a NAS, as I reckon this is my issue, as my other HTPC it does this on the odd occasion too. There must be a bottle neck somewhere. File transfer speeds were certainly quick enough from HTPC to NAS. But I found sometimes changing the jumbo frame size on the HTPC (when I'd get this glitch) would help. Wether it was just a coincedence? I don't know.
Anyhow, I got the shits with it and left it.

I haven't but not convinced it is that.

Actually... I do remember playing the HD mkv's from a portable hdd and they played fine. I think. Jeez. I need to just sit down, with a slab next to me and nut this out, once and for all. Getting a pvr would be easier though...

Yeah how big are there SIM cards though? I got 20gb to remove.

Is 128GB big enough 2 move 20GB?????

Yah doing things the hard long way

Is the data on your phone or saved on a card now anyway, have you checked?

I only had a quick look at your problem so might of missed something,

But why didn't you just back your photo's / contacts to your sim and buy a micro sim card usb reader / dongle and plug that into your laptop?

Just re-read its a crapply........probable doesn't even have a sim card
are you talking sim card or sd card? from my understanding you can only store contacts on the sim card, photos and stuff are stored on the phones memory (but could be wrong) and seeing as its a crapple, it wont have an sd card slot, so he's shit out of luck.

Just had another thought, can you connect crapple and laptop together via Bluetooth and transfer files over that way AB?

It looks like the ICloud back up does it in stages so It only backs up when you have wifi and the phone is plugged in on charge.

Which makes sense otherwise your data plan would be smashed and your phone would go flat, even though apples battery life is crap anyway.

It's done 8gb already but now stopped as I unplugged the charger.

It's just going to take a while...

SD card clunk not sim, yeh I worded it wrong.

Looks like crapple only use internal memory for storage and very limited at that........who the fark would buy such an outdated piece of crap, can't even call it technology.

And of all people Andy I though you would have better taste when it comes to tech gadgets

Nah blokes my phone seems to be knackered and not registering on a computer that its plugged in.

Ie the window does not pop up on pc registering an external device has been plugged in.

However, it does charge off pc USB.

hey AB wouldn't that just be a driver error if you downloaded a driver of the net it probable would register in windows
