Thanks mate, Kris just rung me and basically told me the same thing.

Internet on the PC is super fast with the ethernet cord plug in, just the wireless cuts in and out on Ipad, phone and Tbox, etc....

I might give the wireless a hard reset too and see what happens....See you all next week...LMAO

Hey Andy, just remembered if you want to find out addresses of devices on your network then type arp -a into command prompt
this will show ip addressess and assosiated mac addresses. Your wireless router will have a mac address sticker on it

Ive just had ADSL2+ connected to home (yes thats right, we can get that in tas!!) i am running the latest telstra wireless modem and it works beautifully. Super fast and has not dropped out once yet. Run 2 laptops (and both our phones and the Wii if we want). Thats like 50 messenger pigeons a minute kind of speed!!

Belkin make absolute junk too. You wanna good modem/ router? Billion are the best. I use a Belkin router down the front of my house, one of those N1 Visions, just as a wireless repeater and four port router, as my house is long the signal from the main router is weak down the front, and I find the config of Belkin products is near impossible to understand, slow wireless too.
Good thing about my Billion ADSL2 modem is I can overclock it. Out of the box i was getting a download sync speed of 9700mbps, tweaking the SNR value I managed to squeeze it out to 12600mbps! Soon though I will have a 50mbit connection so that will be snails pace...

hi mate,

sorry i didnt get onto this last night but i was at a party. and im sorry if some things have already been explained BUT sounds like your describing a mix of two problems here your saying your internet is hanging but think its your wireless? is your internet hanging, or is the wifi dropping out? im sure you know these things but:

if telstra have given you a static IP adress that has nothing to do with your local network. arp -a only shows you your local IP adress, thats the IP of the computer. however that IP is just the IP within your local network(so from the modem down). the static IP telstra have given you is the modems IP adress on the telstra network. my computers IP on the NSWDET is 10.17.221.232, this is dynamically assigned be the DHCP(thing that hands out IP adresses). however the departments Ip on the WWW is 153.107.33.155 and that im fairly certain is static(it doesnt matter but i hope you get my point).

SO! you also mentioned that you may have needed to install a driver for you modem, do you think that because the modem came with a CD? usually the CD contains a utility which gives you a simple interface to talk to the modem, however you dont need it! to access your modem goto command prompt and enter ipconfig, a whole heap of info will come up but what your looking for is the default gateway. this is the adress of your modem on your local network(LAN) typically it will be 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1, but i think telstra routers are set to use the 10.0.0.1 IP range.

bear with me, ill get to it in a sec, just helping you understand.

IF your problem is with the wireless, you will be able to fix the problem by doing the following:

to check if your modem is configured properly goto your internet browser, and in the adress bar(where you would put nissanpatrol.com.au usually =P) type the default gateway adress in(remember 192.168.0.1 or what ever it is). from there you can change things like the wifi connection type, from G to N, or the channel if your router is only a G type router. also check your device has the correct user creds on the connection page.

BUT if wifi is not your issue you may want to expore some other possibilities:

1. do you have a line filter on your modem? if yes is it faulty? if no definately get one!

2. plug your house phone into the wall directly, is there static on the line? if so telstra need to investigate faulty wiring to your house.

apart from that i would be happy to go through other more complicated troubleshooting methods on the phone with you if you like. shoot me a PM with your number and ill give you a call and sort it out for you.

Hi mate - for what it's worth (and you've given AB the command to find his default gateway) Telstra uses weird random addresses for their gateway - mine for example is 192.168.1.68??? The issue may well be related to 802.11n be set as default - I have seen this as an issue many times particularly with iPhones and older PCs.

yeah but its not the browser, its from HP itself. The "remember me" button is from the website, the drop down "always remember this password" is from HP. It also has a small icon that pops up whenever you put a password in. If you click on the icon then it starts the password manager thingy. On my lappy its all to do with the fingerprint scanner. HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My bloody computer has slowed down again, well the internet anyway.

I have managed to get access to my default gateway....Thompson TG782T

I also have a static IP so not sure if that makes a difference or not.

When I first logged in I saw that Andy-PC was there twice in the network so I deleted the one that didn't have an IP associated with it so now here are the connections to the modem.

Ethernet = Andy-PC

Wireless = Andy-Iphone, Leah Phone, Andy Ipad and NETGEM-569563 which is our T-Box.

Everything else on the wireless runs fine and fast. The PC is just ridiculously slow using the internet.

You can watch it freeze for 5-10 seconds then work fine for 3 seconds then freeze for another 5-10 seconds.

I just did a speed test and it pinged at 35ms.....Upload was 4.94mbps and upload was only 0.32mbps.

It took while to even get on here and type this...lol

Does anyone know what I can do or any more tests I can do to try and fix this problem?

Sounds more like your printer goes to sleep due to lack of traffic. Most of those on computer dont "ping" the printer to keep it awake.

What O/s are you using and what brand and model printer is it? I'm guessing your printer, it has a dynamic IP address which takes it offline when it cycles through its IP addresses, and is not being seen by the network. You will need to get into the settings of the printer and manually set the IP address of the printer. How? depending on the printer but usually there will be a settings tab and find an option that may say sometihng like "choose or setup up network". It will be in there somewhere.
There is an option somewhere in your setting to print off the network settings, which will show what IP address is currently being used. Then use that as your permanent IP address when you go into the network settings.

I'm having trouble with my wireless laptop talking to my wireless printer. If I don't use the printer for a while, it seems to go 'off line' and I have to ring up Telstra to fix it. They re-install the program, but I don't believe I should have to do that. The print jobs just keep queing up. Please help me solve this and I will be your bestest friend - forever. lol

As other's have mentioned, check your network settings to see if they are communicating properly. Could also re-install the operating software for the printer including drivers.
I have an Epson Workforce 545 that is wifi and is permenantly connected to the modem and will link with pc when needed and has a constant wifi link to my phones and tablets as well.

It could also be your modem / router as well. Try recycling it - turn off for a minute and then on again - to remove the build up of any data packets which can cause it to slow down and "drop connection" as well to see if that fixes things

X 2.
I will probably be because the automatic IP address leased to it via the DHCP server in your router has a problem when your printer goes into standby.
I would definitely be reading the manual and allocating a static IP address to the printer (via printer settings). Make sure you set it beyond the IP range of the DHCP table in your router (modem).
Post up your printer and router model and I'll see how I go stepping you though the process.

OK so i downloaded a manual and i got a pop up saying that my Win Zip was expired and would i like to purchase it. Well i must have originally just got a trial version from somewhere when i downloaded the gq manual last year. So what do i do? I dont wanna pay for dat sh1t! Ill more than likely only use it once in the next year or so.

Is there anyway to unZip the GU manual without purchasing WinZip???

(Ive got good, fast internet so i reckon it wouldnt take long to download an unzipped file if one was available)

lucas,

use 7zip or winrar. winrar supposedly expires but it never actually stops working, just reminds you you should pay for it occasionally. both programs are way better than winzip.

Anyone else having problems with Firefox?
This might be a coincidence but ever since around about the time I did an automatic update with Firefox I have been having issues online. Firstly it takes a long time to start up firefox now. It does weird stuff like when I click on the icon nothing happens so I wait a minute then click again and nothing happens so I do it again and after two minutes or so the program launches 3 times.
Basically all the internet sites through firefox have turned really slow, just like I went back to dial up internet. But it seems to slowly speed back up after 15-20 minutes.
Getting onto YouTube is so unbearably slow for the first ten minutes. It's like theres a heap of processes going on in the background and it's getting worse every time. If I try to click on something or scroll down it says "Firefox is not responding". It now keeps popping up that the plugin called "shockwave" has is not working.
So I should start with getting shockwave working? How do I do that? Is there some kind of refresh I can do to firefox? Or should I just remove and reinstall it?
Also on start up and shut down my computer has been running it's own automatic updates. It's always done it from time to time but lately it's been doing it daily.

I'm uninstalling heaps of crap that's built up over time. Hopefully that'll free up the lappy. Then I'll install the latest version of Firefox. Firefox should come with all the plugins that it needs? (such as shockwave?) or seeing how I should already have the latest Firefox, would it be better just to update shockwave first and see how it goes?
When updating Firefox last month it did a scan to make sure it was compatible with all existing plugins. Could this be where the problems with shockwave started?

I don't know what's going on. Getting fu$king pissed off though. The laptop (including Firefox) has run lightning fast and perfectly up to about a month ago when it started slowing down. In the last few days it's been beyond a joke!
It just took 8 minutes to open Firefox and go to YouTube and once there wouldn't play a video because the shockwave plugin is still effed.

Everything is going really slow. It takes about 8 minutes for the damn thing to start up.

I've scanned it, it's fine. Removed a heap of old programs(not important ones, just games and stuff).

I doubt it's because of it's capacity used mate. As spooner said, HD and ram in laptops go quicker after a while due to heat build up inside a cramped enclosure. However it's 3 years old.
Let me look up HP laptops and see what key you press to get into SafeMode on start-up. It's either F8 or F9.

Is it just a coincidence that its slowed down and also the flash player plugin has crapped out at the same time?
I still can't get it to play a video either from the net or from my hard drive. It takes forever then tells me shockwave has crashed or is unresponsive. I've updated Adobe flash player, shockwave flash player, tried to update the video card drivers but they're already up to date.

Hmmm to me all of this smells like corruption somewhere on the hard drive, preventing updating a specific area even if you run the drive update function.
Mate at this stage, honestly I suggest ( if it even lets you ) to back everything up in case it worsesn. And run the recovery tool to bring it back to factory condition.
During my IT years your case we used to call the snowball effect, where you digging and attempting to fix a bugging issue, may open up many more cans of worms and stuff up things which were fine.

team viewer is a great program bob, however it is not suitable for this application, it needs to be run from within windows and to fix lucas's problems he would need to reinstall windows fully not just a restore. the best i can offer is to talk him through it over the phone. its really straight forward, and once you take care of the begining the computer will do it all itself.

yeah I realised that and amended my post. I will leave it to you as you are the expert

The HP restore wipes the whole drive, and restores and lappy as it was when he bought it, including the devices drivers. If you do a simple windows install, don't forget you'll have to manually install drivers.

My computer is a HP, should I try the HP restore first?
How much work is it to reinstall the drivers?

Black screen of death help me!!!

I leave my computer on 24/7 but we had a black out today. Just got home and it won't start. Goes through the usual start up but before windows start the screen just goes black but you can see the mouse cursor.

It wants to do a disk scan, I press ok, same thing happens above.

Then I tried to boot in safe mode which works fine and then restarted computer in normal mode same problem as above but it says cannot open volume for direct access when I try to run a disk scan on start up.

If I try to start comp without running disk check same problem as the start.

My question is...help me please!!!

Second question...what can I do in safe mode to try and find and fix this problem. This poor old clunker has had a hard life!!!

Hiya AB, sounds like you have lost startup files...........The fix: If its a laptop, remove hard-drive, keep hard-drive, then bash-burn-bury laptop. buy a new one and externally connect HDD to gain access to files.
If you have a newish desktop computer: remove hard-drive, and install a new HDD, format and load windows. Once again externally access your old HDD via cable and gain access to your old files.

If its an old desktop computer: bash-burn-bury

AB has exceeded their stored private messages quota and cannot accept further messages until they clear some space.

Clear your inbox, im was trying to send you a PM :)

2ns thing. By taking out your old hard drive and using a new one, you do not loose anything at all. You can gain access to all your 'life' on your old HDD. But I would use a new HDD to install a fresh install and then once everythinf is working well, transfer your 'life from your old HDD to the new one. Then you can format the old disk and use it as a backup drive.

I hope I sound clear in the above

I'm no computer guru but try booting to command prompt only, majority of the time its the F8 key to give you booting options then run Chkdsk

or boot up in safe mode and run Chkdsk

I have had it happen before and I have always recovered from it.

The other thing to try if you have a spare computer 2 use is run your HDD as a slave 9 times out of 10 it will recognize its got an error and run the Chkdsk anyway

For Lucas, I would strongly advise against using HP restore. While it does restore your laptop it also fills your hard drive with all the unnecessary crap that HP want you to use. What I would do and do for all my laptops and pc's, BA knows how many I got,

get all the drivers from the HP website for your laptop, unzip them if they are zip files and put them onto a USB stick.

Then grab copy of your chosen O/s, put it in your laptop, reboot and reload fresh.
Then just put the drivers in for the LAN, USB, touchpad, graphics, wireless card, chipset drivers etc etc.
Then do an Windose update, put your favorite A/v on, not Norton for the love of god
Then load on your favorite browser, email program (don't forget to back up your email data too) and Micro$oft Office program
Download the latest is Adode Reader, Flash player plugin etc etc

For Andy.
Sounds like your graphics driver is foobar from the sudden shut down. Because you can get into safe mode its a software issue. No biggie. Many things to try, uninstalling the graphics drive when in safe mode, reboot and reload the driver. The screen will be all out of wack with no drivers but its manageable to surf the net to find the driver if you don't already have it.
Boot into safe mode and you should get an option to boot to the last known good configuration, or something along the lines of that. Try this. Or....

Boot into Safe mode, click start > My Computer > Right click on your primary drive C: it usually is > click properties > click tools in the upper tab > clcik check now under error checking > select "Automatically fix file system errors" It will then say it wants to do this check upon the next restart etc etc, select yes and then restart.

Or

Boot into safe mode again, once in Windose, Select the Run tab, type in cmd. This will bring up a black screen. If your O/s is loaded onto the C: drive type in chkdsk /f. The /f is the command to find and fix file system errors, if you type /r instead of f this command will find and fix file system errors but also scan for and try to recover bad sectors on the hard drive.

Both options here do the same thing but in different ways.

Something I always used to push onto my customers is back, back backup! Get yourself a NAS (Network Attached Storage) or even a portable hard drive and back the shit up!!!!.
Cloud storage is great for important files etc, I use dropbox, to back up my emails and other files. Free accounts for up to around 50GB are available. Plus you can have dropbox on your smart phone too and when you take a pic anywhere, you can upload it to drop box on your phone, then when you get home you can see the pic on your computer without plugging a cable in.
Business stuff goes onto my NAS ( and onto a portable drive kept off site) which holds 6 x 2TB drives, it uses only five and the sixth one just sits there and if one drive goes south the sixth will take over the foobar drive and then email me if this happens.
Every laptop and pc I have I keep all the drivers on the NAS, all Windose Discs, Micro$soft dics, anything I have created image files and store them on my NAS.

But as for your issue. It will be a driver issue I reckon if you can get into safe mode fine.

I'm not a fan of system restore or repair, MS failed big time on both.

At what point are you running chkdsk? So by the sound of it you can boot up in safe mode and windows loads up so yes your data files should be fine.

If you can safe boot with networking and have internet access just download Windows XP black edition and re install windows

not true. the crack i use is a clock stop which prevents windows activation clock from counting down and fools the computer into thinking its genuine. the only thing that will bring it unstuck is the "Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool" which does nothing but checks the activation clock and restarts it.

using a windows loader program may be easy for you but not for someone who has no experience or interest in working those things out. also alot of those stupid updates do bugger all anyway, (i know they do fix bugs etc but i reckon at the end of the day they are microsofts way of fooling people into thinking "were supporting you and looking after you")

I see where your coming from. TBH I haven't used stop clock cracks in a long time for the said reasons since I discovered Loader programs. They aren't hard to use at all too. Well the hardest bit is the destination drive has to be blank, no partition or drive letter assigned to it. So it needs to be totally blank like it was a brand new drive. All is done then is load on Widose, don't give a code when prompted, when you finished loading and your in Windows open up the loader program, choose what brand of PC you wish to have, HP, Asus, Dell etc and it loads and your done. You can update, the Malicious software tool doesn't see it etc etc. Its quite easy. The main reason I want the updates is I run two HTPC's on W7 Ultimate using Windows Media Centre program. They have done some good updates to this program and its quite good to use now,the UI is really nice.
For anyone else interested in what the loader program actually is. Its used in a similar fashion when you buy a branded laptop or desktop (e.g HP, Dell, Lenovo etc) and Windows in pre loaded. You have an OEM Version of Windows on there from the manufacturer. Basically the loader program does the same thing to your pc. I have a custom build gaming pc here and Windows thinks its an Acer PC. I could have chosen a better brand I think.
Lol! Now that I've said all that, you and I are probably the only people who would understand this jargon. Anyhow, the crack is probably the best option for Lucas but he has to be careful of not accidentally updating.

Cheers.

Yeah mate totally understand. With regards to your htpc setup, what do you use in media center? Or do you just use straight media center? I use media browser it's unreal been using it for years. Also what do you use to manage your media? I have 13tb worth of data to manage and I Like all my stuff to be named and displayed properly with artwork and metadata. Have you heard of media center master? Best program I have ever paid for (I've paid for very few to Lol)

Before the reinstall I just used windows media player with a patch to help it read .mkv files. I was just going to do that again but im just wondering if there's a better program?
I don't watch a great deal off my laptop and I don't need pretty GUI's fancy functions or wanky library systems that are hell bent on making me go insane lol.
So just a simple player that can handle all file types will do me. I used to use VLC on my XP computer

Yeah cool. Even my old version played heaps of file types.

Windows media centre came in with the new install. It looks like one of these though

I use the W7 Media Centre program, along with a 3rd party program called My Movies. When you open this program and you want to add a new movie, you simply type the name, language, country, type (DVD, BluRay etc etc) and it searches the IMDB for the title, covers and all the info and adds it to your Media Centre. My brother inlaw uses Media Browser. I have too but you know when you have used one thing for so long you get used to it? This is me with Media Centre. I'm used to it, the wife is, and the kids are. They all know how to navigate via a remote around the HTPC.
All my media mostly movies, (last count was 412 and mostly Bluray rips ranging from 6GB to mostly 13GB and some are 30GB), is on a 10TB network drive (5x 2TB and one spare which automatically kicks in and rebuild the array in one drive goes foobar) and then I have a little Dlink DNS323 dual drive NAS with 2 x 2TB green drives for my Torrents. Getting bloody full though, I have around 1.88TB of Torrents constantly online seeding 24/7, the Dlink cant take the 3TB drives so I have to start thinking about upgrading the Torrent NAS. All Windows based too. It's easy to navigate, and my whole family can use it so thats the way it will stay I reckon.

Why? Anyone who does P2P would understand. Anyone who seeds as much as me put your hand up. I have an invite to the worlds largest private torrent site. Torrentleech. Just checked, since I joined i have uploaded 4.4TB and downloaded 2.07TB of content. If only I had a seed box and could upload at 100Mbit my uploads would be 100 fold.

Meh! Go with iiNet. I'm with them and have been for nearly 10 years. The owner was taken to court years back for apparently letting his customers use their ISP for P2P traffic, which he was. In a nutshell, took them to court, said prove it or eff off. They couldn't prove it. Something along the lines of that.
Anyhow, I use around 120Gb per month just in uploading, and iiNet won't be sending any letters of that kind anytime soon.

That maybe the case but they'll be being watched very closely...... I also used to be an iiNet customer for many years from when they first started up, until they became big and started forgetting about their wa customers

Funny that. iiNet are originally from Perth too...They all get big but they are still good and reliable. Much better than Hell$tra whom I was with prior. Every month the bill would come in and it was wrong, so I had to spend hours each time on the phone trying to learn a different language and I still got no where.

Funny you should say that because I actually switched to the darkside and have had no issues at all with them. It's now been 2 years and service has actually been very good so far. iiNet's service on the other hand went from good to non existent, internet and phone kept dropping out and they just did nothing about it, had VoIP but quality was bloody awful.......... Now I have a fully working internet and phone that works, download speeds are faster because I've not had any issues, I've not had the pleasure of having to deal with their customer service team
