GU Steering Play

Hi
I have 2004 3LTD Auto. With vehicle stationary and off, there is quite a bit of freeplay in steering. With engine running or while driving this freeplay seems to dissapear to a large extent although there still seems to be a small lag in steering left to right and vice versa.
Is it normal for this large freeplay while engine is off. I assume the steering box is being loaded up from the power steering hydraulics with engine running and taking up any play in the system.

I think (think) you're right in your assessment mate - the pump loads up the pressure and take the free play out of it - that said, I'm sure there's a 'limit' as such where if the play is too much, it could suggest an issue. No doubt someone will be along with more definite info mate.

Yeah that could be the issue. once the P/Steer fluid build pressure it goes away. might be time to adjust the steeringbox
