We have had a open sky awning for years and really abused it, the bag is torn at both ends, 1 clip has broken so its only held in by 2 now and it still gives me good service.
This weekend we asked too much of the poor thing and camping on sandy ground had it pegged down but the wind still flipped it over the car and basically trashed all the pipes so it is a gonner.
If we're going to replace it we were thinking of something that has removable walls
This Polaris mob seem to have a good product that can be customised;
http://polarisinnovations.com/
just real worried about the price.
We have seperate walls in mind and reckon we will only ever use 1 or 2 walls at a time depending on the weather direction, but think something that has zips or velcros at the "joins" so wind and rain doesn't blow in.
Want to keep it simple and quick to use as well.
Show us what you have to give us some ideas,
Thanks Macca
P.S. As much as I like Rosco's it is too big for us, cheers old mate, that is one impressive camp.

Wow Macca they are expensive mate! You can get a pair of ARB awnings for what they want just for the side awning. I paid $500 from ARB for a 2.5 side and a 1.2 rear awning.

You can buy the walls off ebay in screen for $120 or i have seen them in Canvas in the last couple of weeks too but not sure on the price.

Did you find a price for the Polaris one?

Yep in that link above they list the side awning for $505 inc GST but without walls. Walls available separately.

If your heart is set on a canvas one then check out Black Widow too mate, theirs is canvas. I could not justify canvas over the ripstop stuff that ARB use. Especially give the price was double.

I saw Kris's home made awning up at the high country and I was pretty impressed.

He just used some C channel with a sail track and good quality, double folded and double stitched canvas on the eyelets, etc. You could use whatever material obviously.

His one extended over 3m and worked a treat!

I agree with the rip stop, that part is as good as new after 6 odd years.
Like to see what Kris has done, could be an idea forming there.
Canvas mobs here do great work but you have to be prepared to wait, they have that much work on.

Mate, I'll see if I have a pic somewhere. Total cost $70 but I had a few things that cost me nothing but still well under 100 bucks.

I got my fox wing for $699 with a rhinjo deck chair. Easy and qiuck setup. Bit concerning setting it up in the wind but once she's up it's beut. I reckon it is easier than a straight one to set up and it does 270deg around the car. 9/10 I reckon. Is more expensive than most though.

I do like those fox wing jobbies.... also saw on at the 4x4 show which is pivoted in the middle so can be rotated to any position you want............. I didn't get a price, was too scared to ask!!!!!!! lol

I have seen those aswell. Built like an umbrella you would see sticking out of a table near a pool at a resort. The one I saw was self supporting.. No poles at all/ No wind either though. Wonder if they come with poles? Also did not look quite as big of a span as the foxwing.

aye those are the ones, looks like theyre just supported in the middle which in turn is supported by the roof rack............ I didnt see any poles or guy ropes either and no more that a 1.75m span by the looks of things

Saw those foxwings at a show, was a bit wary of them as a 4x4 journo mate bagged them, but seeing one used changed my mind for sure.
Not sure if they are a bit big for us and not so easy to put up just for a smoko stop, extra shade area could be a good thing though.
If there is no wind the poles wouldn't be needed either. Windbreak walls have a question mark over them as well.
More options to consider,
Macca

The foxwings go up pretty bloody quick. Has never stopped me getting it out for smoko. The good part is you swing it round and clip the tensioner up APPROX 15sec and then put the poles in MAYBE a minute. I don't worry about guy ropes unless the wind is getting up. Unzipping the cover is the longest part, if you panic and jam the zip you may blow out to 1.5min : ) Easy as with one person. Rolling up the awning by yourself is a mission if you don't have the support across the front. The thing that i realy like is the not having to hold the awning, pole, two guy ropes, pegs and a hammer all at once.

Don't have any walls so I don't have any advice there. They do exist though.

i cant really fault my arb awning.. does everything i need it to... i also like the sacraficial connections at all the pivot points..... the plastic connectors are what break first and only about 20 bucks each.... i always keep a couple spare not that i need them....only ever broken 1 and that was me rushing!!!

Sorry Macca, nearly forgot.
Here's the awning rolled out on the grass at home. The blue lenghts on the bar side are for rolling it up neatly.
It acts as a wind and rain break because they end up on the roof to stop the elements.. The 2 little gaps are where the mounting bolts go.
I have velcro around on the 1x1" ally square bar and on the ends of the blue sheets. This will give you plenty of play depending if it's rolled up neatly or roughly...lol The secret is to cut the flap length spot on but you could make it longer and put another row of velcro on it.

The sail track is screwed onto the square bar and the tarp slides in. The tarp has to have rope in the side or it has to be sawn in ...otherwise no go. If you get a really good tarp it will have the rope it in it. Make sure the sail track matches the rope size as well.
I have crimped the ends of the sail track slightly so it doesn't slide out
