Hi there,

Can someone help me out with an issue on the rear lights.
The lights on the rear bumper work, however the lights fitted on the sides of the body panel don't.

Is this normal?

Regards

AG

Yep - another thread just recently on this one too mate - bloody Nissan in their wisdom ruled them out as they are blocked at certain angles by the spare wheel, subsequently they put the ones in the bumper and left the others as blanks?? Cost saving exercise got to ridiculous levels I would suggest.

Not overly difficult to wire them up if you're half handy though.

I've been wanting to do this on my GQ for ages as well. I'm guessing it would be basically the same process, may be a stoopid question, but does anyone know if you can get aftermarket ones for a GQ with the looms etc already in them that you can just plug and play? I don't have any issues with having to wire them in, but I'm lazy... ;)

The lights you can definitely get from Bursons or Repco - not sure on getting the looms though ... haven't seen them, but considering the lights are sold, you'd think that maybe someone realises the demand and has done it!

Chers Bigrig, I might do a bit of investigating over the weekend and see what I can find out. If I get some good/handy info, I shall post it!

Plenty of sellers on E-Bay with kits to do this conversion on GU's, not sure on GQ's though.

There has to be a way to do it, I just read back through im2extreems christmas tree thread and Warnie did the conversion on his GQ, I however want to keep the lights in the bumper cos I reckon it will look killer with the double set. Worst case scenario, I'll just have to make up my own wiring, but I'm not too sure about which bulbs holders etc to use. I have seen a few GQ's getting around with the dummy lights working, maybe a different or earlier model than my 95 was actually fitted out with them, or maybe it was a Maverick. Regardless, I'll figure it out and let y'all know.

Mine are done also mate, but had an auto sparky wire them up - got the lights themselves from Bursons. Just not sure about being able to get a plug and play loom. I have a custom rear bar now so have no lights in it and needed the quarter panel lights working.

I was just doing a bit of web surfing to see what's out there and at a quick glance it appears you can only get the replacements with just the reverse light. Mine is a GQ2 which has only the reverse light and big red non working brake/parker lens. The indicator and brake lights are in the bumper. I just want to put a bulb and what not on there, and patch into the wiring so the upper brake/parkers work. Might be better off just getting a sparky to wire it up. I do work for an engineering firm so I should be able to get someone to sort it out for me!

This is the style that I have, and you can see that the upper lens is closed off, I don't know whether I can just run a holesaw through the plastic at the diameter of a bulb holder and patch in the wiring or not.

Just found these ones, looks like the globe and cables are there, just gotta patch them in to the existing loom in the bumpers.......... I'm looking to do this as well at some point in the near future.

edit: might be an idea to change out the globes to led to lessen the current draw and prevent blown fuses

yeah, I was thinking of going LED, they'd be a little brighter too. Hmmm, decisions,decisions...I like the look of the ones currently in the old girl, would the triple lens be as aestheticaly pleasing? hehe. I notice you are here in the Wild West as well clunk...might be a chance to meet up and endure the tail light mission....

Anyone know about the legal issues with these lights? I like the prices of the Ebay lights, but had a salesperson tell me none of yhem are ADR approved. This means there could be insurance or rego issues. Any one know anything about this. Of course the lights he could source me were over double the price of the ebay ones.

As long as you retain the original lights in the bumper your legal lighting requirements are covered, additional tail lights are accessory lights in the same way as spot lights.
Even if you were to fit ADR approved upper tail lights (and remove the bumper mounted lights) they would still not be legal unless you permanently removed/relocated your spare wheel.

What am i missing here? Why did mine not come with these bumper lights? Notg that it matters anymore i dont have the standard rear bar now anyway. Was this only after a certain year they decided to "improvise"

There must have been a ADR change in about '92 where the powers that be decided that the off centre mounted spare wheel obstructed visibillity of the RH upper tail light when viewed from some angles, so that's why later GQ's had bumper mounted tail lights that the earlier GQ's did not.

Which is exactly what I've done - spare wheel now housed on top of the drawer system in the back. Stops those pesky rattles on the door frame also (especially when off the black stuff).
