Hi

I have a 1999 Patrol 2.8 diesel and I'm having a couple of issues with it.

Its got a weird problem, that goes as follows....drive the car at a steady speed and every 3 seconds you get a dose of diesel rattle (just like when a petrol engine "Pinks" under load). This will also be accompanied by a bit of a surge.

Apparently when I'm followed you get a puff of black smoke from the exhaust which coincides with the rattle.

All thoughts are that the rattle is an over fuelling situation, hence the puff of black smoke.

Car has been into a 4x4 specialist who has checked through all of the vacumn hoses, intercooler pipes and the intercooler itself looking for air leaks. MAF has also been checked and everything checks out OK.

So now the finger is being pointed at the main Injector Pump unit itself.......interestingly when the engine is being rev'd from idle you can get the engine to rattle at the same 3 second interval, which also coincides with a very faint click coming from within the Injector Pump itself.

Question......do these pumps have any known faults...has anybody experienced this problem themselves.....does the pump need a full overhaul or are there any solenoids or sensors that can fail which would cause this fault?????

Many thanks
