My gu has just started having this problem when its cold starts first time no problems but when its warm can take up to 5 goes at starting would i just need to get the new plate and o ring from nissan to fix this also thinking could be glow plugs as they may not have been changed since new i bought the car about 7 yrs ago from the original owners and it had been really well looked after never missed a service and book all stamped from the same dealer

This is a common problem on RD28 as the injector pump wears. Fitting the new cover plate should fix the starting issue for a while, it won't reverse the wear in the pump.

Glow plugs will cause difficult cold starting and cost a lot more than the $40 odd cover plate, do the cheap things first.

The cover plate is in a difficult to reach position on the side/bottom of the pump. You are basically working blind when taking it off and putting it back on. Positioning the O-ring is not easy to establish and mistakes are easily made. Use a mirror and a torch to check if the ring is properly positioned before tightening the bolts. Also, I suggest you put a tarp under the car when you work on this as it is easy to drop the ring, bolts, tools or plate when you're working in the blind and just on feel. The tarp will make it easy to find your parts back after you dropped them. (I found this on another forum, I've never worked on an RD28 myself).

You disconnect an emmissions control device and it blows less smoke................Ironic isn't it.

Not wrong there car is smoother to drive with these mods done cant say ive noticed any difference with fuel but then again there is a tent mounted uptop which will pretty much stay up there now i and did the fan simply because with a bull bar and spotlights the air flow to the scoop is interupted will eventually hook it up to a switch inside the car i figure better to try keep the air going through as cool as i can

For when you replace the plate, use some Vaseline to hold it into position.

Ok jus got around to doing the hot start fix found it was really easy took around 20min to do and that was with taking pics so should take around 10min have uploaded some pics of the job this is how i did it
1) remove the battery opens area up and allows easy acess to plate
2) undo the 2 bolts holding the plate and remove plate and o ring
3) install new o-ring and plate tighten up the bolts
4) Re install battery start the car check for leaks
easy as that

Hey guys, thanks for the info. I'm going to get in touch with Nizbits, but wanted to get a heads up on what the plate an 'O' ring actually do? My 2.8 cranks over for ages, initially on cold then both hot and cold. Once it's running, there's no problems at all so I don't think it's a fuel supply issue. It's got me completely stumped
Any suggestions would be fantastic.
Thanks in advance, Mark

Sounds like you need to replace the glow plugs AND the advance plate, go genuine glow plugs tho.

The plate and 0 ring replaces the existing plate, it has a raised section which advances the pump.

Hey guys, after all that, it was the timing in the pump that was out and had nothing to do with the crank angle after all. It turns out that a $40 timing advancer for the fuel pump from Nizbits was all it took. It's starting better than it EVER has. There are a couple of good threads on here about the fuel pump advancer and how it's fitted. Thanks everyone for the input and feedback.

Garry from Nizbits was really helpful. The pump error was a factory issue and supposedly issued by Bosch a few years ago. He sent the part and info sheet which I've kept with my vehicle manual. Excellent result all round.

Hi,

Got the hot start issues on a GU 2.8 SWB in Germany.
I was able to find the cover timer plate 096218-1030 (Denso) at the guys in Spain Rufre.com .
I believe they ship world wide using FedEx.
