View Full Version : TB42 extended rotor button - the ridge inside is dodgy, does that matter?

G'day,

Just got an extended rotor button - the kind with the brass/bron2e bit attached to the top.

Inside, where the dissie shaft goes, there is a ridge that locates the button on the shaft prior to doing up the 8mm bolt.

On the one I just have, the ridge has been squashed flat, is about twice as wide as it should be, and less than half the height.

I the bolt will hold the rotor on - I guess I'll wiggle the rotor to make sure the bolt is square to the flat on the shaft.

I'm inclined to send it back and ask for a rotor as it should be. Is there any reason that they would have modified the rotor that way? - do you think it should go back??

Doesn't sound right to me, can you get a photo of it?

I agree with Tony mate & a pic would be good. If it is faulty I would be sending it back at there expense & getting it replaced as they are worth there weight in gold when its the right one.

BTW if its wiggling around on the shaft I wouldn't be running it full stop as it may now be off center in its rotation.

thanks Patch and Ynot, a photo will test my skills as it is a small ridge up in the bore of the rotor, that slips over the dissie shaft.

Until the bolt is done up, it will be free to rotate on the shaft. Once the bolt is done up, it will not.

My thought it Mr Nissan put it there for a reason, and I'm not happy that it is not there on the new replacement.

I'm off to near St George and then to the Dig Tree for 10 days or so with a few mates, so will be off the air for that period. I think I will have a look at it on a quiet morning while we are away - and if not 100% convinced, will send it back with the Melbourne mate who was kind enough to pick it up for me and bring it up.

Thanks again for your advice. I appreciate it :-)

Mate the ridge that stops the rotor is a small flange/saddle at the base of the dizzy shaft......

You may not have a genuine rotor button there & thats the difference your seeing.

When the rotor buttons sitting on the shaft does it have much if any sideways movement between the rotor & the shaft itself????? .... Without the retainer bolt in of course.

I'll check it out, Patch, and thanks. The one that is currently fitted came from Nissan, so will be able to compare.

Maybe the ridge at the top of the hole merely locates the metal collar inside the rotor button.

I can see a vertical groove machined into the metal collar inside the rotor button, goes the full depth of the button. Reading what you said, maybe that engages the small flange/saddle you refer to. That groove is opposite the bolt hole, and thus the flat in the dissy shaft.

The replacement is marked made in Japan. It has been previously fitted.

I'll report back when I've had a good look in daylight at the dissy shaft, the factory rotor, and the replacement. That may be tomorrow morning if I wake up early :-) otherwise I'm off out West at 0800 :-)

Thanks again for your help!

Hello all, and thanks again for your help.

Finally installed the rotor button a few hours west of here - the inside of the factory original and the replacement are the same. Despite my memory that there is a location system in addition to the bolt, there isn't!

All I can think is that I must have been remembering the dissy on the L28 in the MQ - dunno. Anyway, the idle has improved, maybe the power a bit. Ran fine from St George in Qld, west to the Dig Tree near the SA border, and all the way back to Brisvegas, so appears to be a winner!

Great news Silver & thanks for the update....

All you need now is a good ignition system to go with it & you won't look back.

I went the way of a HEI with a multispark ignition box & ICE Ignitions 4100 super coil, all running through 8mm 1000hom leads.

This combo made a massive difference to peddle response, power & economy.

I've had it in for almost 18months now & haven't touched it (with exception to occasionally checking the cap itself).

I'd hate to be on the end of it as I reckon it'd all but stop your heart but it was money well spent IMO
