View Full Version : Gu gearbox issues

hi all the name is mitchell , im new to the forum and after some advice , i just purchased a 08 GU patrol with 80 000 on the clock its in as new condition but for some reason when i change into 4th it wants to grind but if i put the clutch down and wait 1second before trying to select 4th it goes in fine ..all other gears are fine... any advice would be appreciated

Sounds like a worn syncro on 4th gear. You could try changing the gearbox oil but that may not have any affect if the syncro is badly worn.

not sure mate but maybe the thrust bearing might be shot
what ever it is seems like a rebuild on the way

that was the other thing i was thinking of your syncro on fourth gear maybe worn

cheers guys do u think its best to pull it apart now and fix the problem or wait until it gets worse

If it was my car I would change the oil first and see what effect that has. It that does nothing then it's really up to you whether you get used to slow shifting or fork out the money to get it rebuilt.

Thanks mate ill try that , for now its not a real issue but ill sort it over the next few months so i can start doing some of the trips you guys talk about ...

Same as ynot has said , change your gear oil first . pay some attention to the condition of the old oil that drains out - colour , metal shavings ,
viscosity , etc . some drain plugs have a magnet incorporated into them so look at that too. you can always use a pair of stockings wrapped
around a coathanger to sive the oil to check .
