I'm going to drop my GUIV MY05 DX auto with 300K on the clock into my mechanic in about 4 weeks time. I bought it a few weeks ago for 14K and it seems to go OK but runs a bit rough at idling. I'll get him to do all the oil changes (engine/transmission/diffs) and to check things over. Is there anything I should specifically ask him to look for? I hear all sorts of little noises I can't identify (apart from the tyres). They don't sound alarming and as I don't know the vehicle I might be able to assume that these are normal for a Patrol but who knows?

G'day Wal, ask him to find you a nice GQ, there are plenty of them around :-)
Spark plugs and leads might contribute to rough idle if it is a petrol.
I understand GUs are more luxurious and quiet than GQs, having borrowed a mates' GU. A certain level of ambient noise is part of the experience of driving a GQ, so can't help you with mystery noises.
There is a great routine maintenance thread on here that lists what to look for when - have a look for it in the General Mechanical section of the forum - its the first one there, and see how you go!
