Hello All, I have a GU Patrol turbo diesel 3.0litre which is now taking some time to start in the morning. I thought it might be the glow plugs and hence have been leaving the ignition on for a fair bit longer which usually helps. To my surprise this is not helping. The rest of the day however it starts just fine.

Would anyone know if this is the glow plugs or something else?

The glow plugs were replaced just over a year ago.

Cheers Dave.

If it is the glow plugs is it worth the $308 for genuine parts or will Bosch plugs that are $99 be just as good?

Hi David,

You need to check your glow plugs first. I have the same problem on my 2.8TD and found three of my glow plugs are buggered.

Here is a video from Terrain Tamer that I followed on how to check them. It is really simple.

IMO I wouldnt go past the BOSCH plugs. They are a reputable manufacturer and I havnt had any issues with purchasing starter motors, Spark plugs etc. (You will find that they make a lot of genuine parts as well)

Cheers,

Hi Dave,

You will need to check your glow plug circuit and then each glow plug first to confirm the problem.

The problem with changing over to standard metal tip Bosch glow plugs, is that on the ZD30 engines the after glow runs for a long period of time once the engine has started and the concern is that the metal tips will burn out very quickly.

So you will also need to modify the glow plug timer circuit.

There was a thread on this just recently that showed how to do it.

Cheers Rodney

I have the bosch ones. no dramas with them. found one of my old ones was clipped. Have the same problem you are having but glow's didn't fix it. mine appears to be worse when i park the car facing up hill. this is the same for you?
Update: didn't realise there was a realy chnage that needed to be done though. will have to look into this..

Hello everyone, thanks for your input. Friend of mine suggested it may be my battery i.e. it's may be on the way out and losing a bit of its oopmh. Am going to test this tonight by putting the charger on overnight. If it is the battery I will know first thing when I try to start tomorrow.

And Scotty I have had no issues with starting on any level. This is the first real issue i have had with my truck.

I'll let you know how I go with the battery test!

So Dave, I bet it was your battery! As we haven't heard from you. It would have been my suggestion.
