morning folks, have been researching site for info on towing in 5th gear(2.5 ton ), my dx ute 4.2 non turbo,2000 mod, is reving too hard in 4th and sitting on 80 ks is a little inconsiderate on fellow road users in my opinion, pulling 2400revs in 5th at 100ks, , can I expect my gearbox to shear the spline in 5th gear at some stage, Im nursing the dx along at the moment , but am i pushing my luck ??, would hate to break down in remote area, ps not towing in sand hills , just the odd dirt road, most 5th gear towing on black top, has any one out there had any experience with 5th gear towing ?? thanx Barry & Robyn Adeaide

I believe the early GU's are weak in 5th. you could fit 33's and use 4th.
There is a mod you can do as the later ones have a better contact system with the overdrive gear.
Tony "ynot" knows a bit about it I think.
2.5 ton is too much for 5th in my opinion.

the td42 makes power to 4000rpm, dont be shy. you can easily sit at 100km/h in 4th reving around the 3000rpm mark.

thanx for the input fellas.... the 5th gear upgrade is a bit out of my capabilities.....rather than pull a gearbox apart , is it feasable to exchange box for later model? ? very good pics thanx.. 3000rpms plus in 4th...for 6-8 hours at a time in 40 deg heat...will the old 4.2 handle that towing van ?? may need shares in oil well...Bazz

Yes it will handle it. and you will use just as much fuel in 5th if not more and quite frankly because 5th gear is an overdrive your motor WILL work harder your gearbox WILL be working harder. Also the fuel used is much cheaper than a gearbox.

I would never tow with that much weight in 5th, and mine's a TDi. I tow my full 7 x 5 trailer (<750kg) around in 4th and haven't had any probs at all.
