Hi guys,

i just bought yesteday my first GQ and everything was without any problems. Tukk it for a testdrive, all ok! I tukk it home about 80kīs and today also for another 50kīs without any probs.

Now on the way back home, the transmission ist not shifting in 3rd or 4th gear. just 1+2 and reserve.
It seems that there is also a slight rattle (metal) out of the gearbox when shifting down (red light), but not sure if this out of the trans?

Oil level is ok, i disconect the plug of the wiring harness to the inhibitor switch and trans went into 3rd gear.

I tried to carry out the ECU diganostic check, but this wont work, maybe wrong way or just to stupid!?!

Can anyone help me out there or have a idea about this problem? How is the correct procedure for the diagnsotic check?

There are 400k ont the clock but i have a recipe for a complete trans rebuilding at 220k over 5K.

Thanks and cheers

Feel your pain mate, I had the same problem, only had 1st 2nd and reverse. Currently rebuilding mine at the moment, I don't know what my exact problem was, but I found a broken wire on my valve body ( not sure what the wire is for at the moment ), also some of the metal plates in one of the clutches wear worn 2 buggery ( think its third gear ).
My rebuild thread can be found here: http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/showthread.php?5942-RE4R03A-Gearbox-Rebuild&highlight=gearbox+rebuild

Hope you get it sorted mate

If you bought it from a dealer take it back under warranty.

bought from private!

I just carried out the TCU self test, and the power light dosent go off, it stayīs on. Looks like there is maybe a electrical malfunction with one of these sensors.

Does any one have a testplan to check the inhibitor switch,kick-down switch,O/D switch and Throttel position sensor? Also can i check the TCU?

By the way, if it com to the worst case i need to rebuild the transmission, anyone have a spare one or knowīs where i can get the rebuilding for a good price? Maybe itīs just the valve body or brake band!?!

Thx

Have you checked the fuses?, from memory there are 2 that control the auto.

Hi,

yes Yender, i allready checked the fuses on the driver side under the dashboard. All Ok.

I removed the oil pan today just to see if something wrong there, i drained about 8 Liter ATF, the fluid is still red but a bit more dark, itīs not smelling burnt.
There is a lot of metal stuff at the pan magnet.
I also got the self diagnoses now, it seems to be fault 6,7 and 10 because this are longer flashes than the other ones.

Any ideas at all?

Hi mate,
What self diagnostic instructions are you following?
I have an aftermarket book (haynes i think) and it gives detailed instructions on how to do the self diagnostic check and also details all the codes and what they mean. Dont have the book with me atm as its in the car which is in the shop getting some auto box attention!
When i checked with the self diagnostic it picked the problem correctly.
But metal stuff in the pan magnet is a fairly bad sign id say.
My mechanic (auto specialist) said to me at worst case senerio a full rebuild would be around $2500. (luckily i only needed torque converter $1300)
Goodluck mate:)

The metal is like a kind of silt, no bigger metal particle. Itīs about 5mm high at the magnet. I know it from Volkswagen ;-) a good amount of metal silt seems to be normal. So iīm not sure...even i dont know how long ago the last trans service was.

I did the self test out of the Patrol manual, with the A/T Power light.

Latest Update...

hey guys...i told that i took the pan off and checked inside for brocken wires, today i put the pan and atf oil back. Before, i hit the solenoid valve a few times really gentle and took the TPS off because there was no propper signal out of it. I opened the TPS unit, gave it a good clean and sprayed contact spray on all electrical contactīs.

After i had everything together, i did a test drive and all was working fine..all gears there...power button working...transmission is shifting excellent! The rattle is comming from a little exhaust bracket near the transmission!
So next week i will do a propper ATF service with new oil and filter...and fingers crossed the problem will be solved than!!!!!!

Yeah!

Many thanks to the mob here.....great support!!!!!!

Good to hear mate.

The TPS was the reason behind my auto woes. Someone had put a carbi off a manual on it before i bought it. one of the reasons i thought it was a good buy was because the carbi had been fully rebuilt, with receipts. I didnt know it was off a manual and therefore had no TPS. I found out the hard way.....Torque converter was destroyed, and after getting another fitted ($1300) i found that it was destroyed because there was no TPS (changes oil pressure to the auto at different rpm), found out there was no TPS because the carbi was from a manual, had to get the base off an auto carbi and a TPS then fit it to my carbi(so i could retain as much of the rebuilt carbi as possible). Hopefully and with fingers crossed, the torque converter was the only thing to get damaged from the lack of TPS.....Hopefully!

Back in da bloody game!

Had my GQ today for a bigger drive about 25 kīs....after about 20 kīs the problem with no change into 3rd + 4th gear came back.
I have no idea what the issue is...it looks like something is giving up when hot. I have no tools here yet so i cant messure the TPS...but i will do this next week.

It was the hole week fine (just short traveling for about 3-4 kīs).
No flashing power light...i put the lever allways in N when i was staying at the red lightīs etc.

So it seems to be an electrical fault to me....any ideas out there!?!

Tryed to ring the guyīs from wholesale automatics in bayswater to get a opinion of them..but cant get them on the phone...no response on emailīs.

Cheers

I would say between $1500 to $2000

that would be a rebuild kit, exchange torque convertor and had 2 get a new oil pump cover, still need 2 work out the true cost, but will post it up when i get around 2 it. bought some tools and other bits that i didn't have 2 do the job.

have u checked out my rebuild thread?

Toddrindh--> yes mate, of course i checked out your awesome rebuilding thread...good job!!!

But i put 1k on top, get it done by a specialist with waranty and absolutly no stress for me. Dont have to buy any tools, and not getting any more grey hairs ;-) and all the saved time, i spend it on my boat to fix this up!

Sounds like a plan, or?

Buying tools.....this just gave me excuse 2 get some :)
Grey Hairs........ That's why i shave my hair off every few weeks......stops the from showing :)
Warranty........ Um, don't know about that one, Not sure if I trust my own work enough 2 give it warranty :)
Time Saved.... you got me on that one

hahahaha sounds like a very good plan mate, unfortunately I didn't really have the extra grand 2 spend....If I did I would of just done an exchange with them :)

Are you going 2 go an extreme valve body when u have it out or keeping the original one?

Nordic
21st October 2011, 08:41 PM
lol......i got ya! Nah...i staying with the original, not doing any hard 4wding stuff, so TC lockup switch and 2 oil coolerīs will do the job for the next 200K i think/hope!

Cheers
