Conflicting reports have emerged over the search for an Australian contract worker missing in the Gulf of Mexico after he and his fellow crew members evacuated their rig in bad weather.
Authorities said they had called off the search for 33-year-old man from Queensland, who was as part of a 10-person crew that evacuated a liftboat, the Trinity II, last week and boarded a life raft as Tropical Storm Nate bore down.
The man is the only crew member unaccounted for, as six crew members were rescued on Sunday, while three others - a Bangladeshi and two Americans - died.
Admiral Joaquin Garcia of the Mexican Navy confirmed the search had been called off.
"We follow the established protocols there are. There are determined survival times at sea, above all in his case because he's alone, maybe wearing a lifejacket," he said.
