hullo ,just picked up my new 2nd hand patrol ute,gu4.2 d, driving it home I noticed that although not slipping ,it only takes a bit of pressure on clutch pedal to make it slip, so i'm guessing its nearly had it, was going to drive to Adelaide but maybe not worth it, how do you tell if the clutch is on its last legs, i'm going to tow caravan so is it worth putting in a heavy duty clutch, also whats a ball park park price to get this done ?thanx Baz, Brisbane.

Rip the hand brake on mate and then try and take off in first, if the clutch is good, she'll stall, other than that she'll stink, and you will need a new clutch.
Heavy duty is good if you do a lot of towing, can't help with prices tho.
Cheers , ferret.

G'day Bazz....... I did a clutch change in my 2000 GU about a month ago. I went with a clutch kit (clutch plate, pressure plate and thrust bearing) called "4terrain" from CIperformance..... ciperformance.com.au. I reckon the drive line feels better now than when it was new!!! Highly recommend the 4terrain. The kit was about $500 and the labour was going to be about $1000......that's why I did it myself!! It's a bugger of a job so if you're going to do it yourself you'll need the right gear and a bit of stamina!!

Hey mate, Did you change the flywheel to a solid while doing it, or replace dual mass with another, or not touch it at all? Or is it a 4.2 as well? Just curious, as I am about to do flywheel conversion and was wanting to know how yours went for a bit of inspiration... lol

I have changed the clutch too in May. Before that i didn`t manage to overtake in uphill and hardly reach 60 km/h. Pressed the pedal but acceleration failed. Different story now - uphill on 5-th - the Troll now run as sport car.
I read somewhere in the net for testing the clutch - try to take off in 4-th gear. If its gone the rpm will increase, but the troll will not move.

Here's something for you to check if it applies in your case.
I had a clutch pedal much the same as yours & from time to time the clutch would also slip a little under load. Not log after I brought my GQ I had reason to fit a new clutch master while all this was going on ( its important to mention here that mine as the power assisted clutch booster ) & I found that the previous owner had over adjusted the small adjustable push rod that runs between the clutch booster & the master. What this did was partially close over the pressure bleed off hole in the bore of the master itself which in turn kept a small amount of pressure in the line which was building up more & more with frequent use of the clutch itself. The pressure would bleed off eventually when not using the clutch but it was slow to do so.
So I readjusted it & I haven't had a problem with it, no more slipping & the clutch pedal fells great.
This little problem almost cost me a new clutch which seemed a little stupid to me considering I had receipts for a new safari clutch fitted when the engine was rebuilt & the whole lot was only 60,000 old at time of purchase.

yep it's a 4.2 and nup... I didn't touch it!! After getting that deep I was a bit tired....... the fly wheel showed almost no sign of wear and tear so it's still there as original!

Cheers for the reply. The 4.2s have a solid flywheel standard - that's why I asked. I have an annoying dual mass (zd30 flywheel) to change.
I do like hearing all these good reports on the 4terrain gear though!
Thanks again
