View Full Version : Transfer Case Spacers (on Cross Member)

Howdy
Tony (YNOT) fitted a set of Drop Boxes to the rig recently, and I suspect I need to put spacers on the cross member to lift the transfer case back up - getting a harmonic vibration at speed (could be tailshaft needs balancing also - will be getting that done), and figured I should put spacers in to correct the level it used to sit at ...
Questions - what do I use? And are the bolts that go into the Transfer Case through the cross member going to be long enough? From memory, they weren't that long, and obviously I don't want to reduce the amount of thread that actually goes into the case and holds it in place ...
Thanks in advance one and all ...

Cross member spacers are normally fitted as a means to correct driveline vibration after fitting a big lift, so spacing the gearbox back up would make the problem worse. It may be time to invest in some adjustable upper control arms.

Thanks mate - so are you suggesting that adjustable upper control arms in the rear will allow the rear axle to "turn" to re-align the tailshaft?? Or are you simply trying to ensure that I replace every single component on my rig just for sh!ts and giggles!!! lmao

Lots of giggles this way. But what Tony has stated is correct. All they will do is lay the diff back a little to line up your tail shaft

It's fun corrupting people!!!
Yes the adjustable upper arms will let you adjust the driveline angles. I had longer lower control arms when I had that suspension in my GU but the GQ's smaller wheel arches don't like longer arms, that's why I suggested the upper arms.

Just a little statistic on this.
A universal joint can only take its designed maximum load upto 3 degrees of misalignment, more of an angle than that you'll get premature wear.
A constant velocity joint (CV) can take its designed maximum load upto 20 degrees of misalignment.

hmmm .... straight arms $330 to suit 5" lift ... adjustable arms $395 ... adjustable it is!

I've got longer superior lower arms mate - I think that's half the problem coz I didn't replace the uppers ...

Around 80-90 mate - very harmonic indeed ... but right through the car (not just in the steering) so that's why I'm thinking tailshaft or uni joint angle etc
