I have a 2005 GQ td42 DX ute. Owned it since new 175000kms . Stock as a rock.
Having intermittent no CRANKING problems. shorting out between the starter solenoid and starter positive works fine. Seems only to be when the engine is hot. I am looking for the location of the Fabled STARTER RELAY location. If anyone knows would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Check your earth points as well, can be fickle with temp if they are loose or degraded.

Cheers Mate.
Well found. $261 for a simple relay OMG. A Spot light relay will do fine i reckon. Once i find the F***er.
Am looking near the battery and nothing looks like it yet.
Thanks again
Kirren.

OK here is the latest.
The helpfull man at patrolapart says that the 2005 GU TD42ti does NOT have a starter relay fitted. The circuit is ignition barrel, straight to the starter solenoid.

Check the earths. Even add another from the motor to the body then to the battery. GU's are notorious for earthing issues.

Looking at the drawings now. Yep, on manuals the solenoid is powered directly from the ignition. As Mudski says: Check Earth resistance from starter body to battery negative. ...Or your starter solenoid is shot. Failing solenoids often manifest problems when they're hot.
(I have the exact same vehicle, a 2005 TD42ti DX ute. Went and grabbed my good meter from the shed, measured the resistance from the body of my starter to the battery negative and it's too low for the meter to even read, just comes up 0.00 Ohms, if that helps as a reference).

Gday Nomad,
The starter is only 2 yrs old. I dont think it is a failing solenoid when hot , because, it will always start using the screwdriver method when it is in the hot failed condition.
. If the solenoid was failed due to heat the screwdriver trick would not work..
