yeah its been done The gu air box is very similar to the gq pre filter box the early gq's came out with twin air filters

It's been prob nearly 2 yr's since i did mine. From memory it will bolt up to the existing holes in the inner guard. I had to use a spacer 10mm maybe under one of the feet to get it to sit level. It sat I think about 25mm off the inner guard where it meets the snorkel or inlet. I used a bit of exh pipe spread to the correct size (make it as tight fit as you can) & tapped it gently in the inlet of the air box. I sikaflexed all around it to make sure it sealed well. Then the rubber hose connected to that to the snorkel.

I used the flexy induction hose off a v6 commodore to connect it to the out let of the air box then to another bit of exh pipe to the turbo. You will have to cut down the adaptor that has the maf sensor in it but you will have enough left to connect the hose to. see if I can get some pics.

This should give you an idea of how it fits.

I also got my die grinder out & opened up the inlet hole in the inner guard a little to give the induction pipe some room.

thanks tufftd42, mines a carby petrol but it should be pretty much the same for the air box, just the plumbing will be different I've got a second battery next to the overflow bottle and I was worried that it wouldn't fit in there. has it made a difference to your performance? was it worth the mucking around?

Yort, I never ran the unit with turbo through the 2 existing air filters so don't know what difference it would or has made.I thru them out when I installed the turbo setup. I just had a pod on front of the turbo for a few weeks till I sorted out the gu air box. I'm happy with the setup so yea guess it was worth it. Cheers jono.

I did this on my 1993 gq. it was nowhere near as simple as what some people say it is.
Only 2 of the mounts fitting through existing holes in inner guard but maybe it was because I had twin batteries as mine sat much closer to radiator support than "tufftd42's" does.
The other thing is that my air conditioning hoses were in the way so i had to undo them and move them (didn't matter to me as air con didn't work anyway)
I also had to cut a hole in bonnet support as the bonnet wouldn't close.
I would never do it again.
Especially after i took it to Turboglide down in wollongong to get tuned and they told me that they've done heaps of flow testing and that unless you're running huge boost and mods, there's no advantage doing it over just using the standard gq pre cleaner!

I had to shave a little off the top of the maf sensor/air box housing where it bolts together to get clearance between it & the the bonnet support (easy job literally took 1 min). If you are just using the gq pre cleaner & nothing else for filtration I'm led to believe that it doesn't filter down to the correct microns as with the main air filter. This will/could lead to a dusted turbo/engine.

I had to remove my A/C hoses when I installed the turbo, so didn't have to contend with them when installing the air box. For me it was an easy install.

cheers Jono.

I would have thought there would be some restriction with using the GQ pre filter on the turbo engine.

The inlet for the pre filter is pretty small but if they would know better I guess doing flow testing, etc...

i use a GQ pre filter box as my primary air box. I took it out and cut the bottom off then did a mod and increased the outlet to a 3" out the bottom.

I have a GU IVTD42 int eh driveway too and tried the GU primary filter into the GQ prefilter box. It is snug but it fits. I installed a couple of veins into the inlet side to direct the flow into a circle rather than a blast into the side of the filter and run a GU primary K&N in the GQ modified box.

Note*** The prefilter in a GQ is NOT rated for Primary Filtration and should not be used for this purpose. The GU Primary filter fits and is rated for primary filtration..
