View Full Version : Do I need to replace RE4 auto pan bolts on a GU Patrol?

Hey guys,

I’ve got a 1998 GU Y61 Patrol with the RE4 auto, and I just bought a seal kit for the transmission. While flicking through the official Y61 service manual, I noticed it says:

“Always replace oil pan bolts as they are self-sealing bolts. Before installing bolts, remove traces of sealant and oil from the mating surface and thread holes. Tighten four bolts in a criss-cross pattern to prevent dislocation of the gasket.”

I had a look around and can’t see anyone selling replacement bolts specifically for the RE4 transmission pan (at least not locally). Most kits just seem to come with the gasket and seals.

So my question is — do you guys actually replace the pan bolts every time like the manual suggests? Or is it fine to just clean them up and reuse them with the new gasket?

Would appreciate any first-hand experience or tips.

Cheers!88868

I've had my pan off quite a few times since I've owned my Patrol and I've never seen any reason to replace the bolts and I've never had issues with leaks.
I don't understand what they mean by "self-sealing bolts". They look like normal 6mm bolts to me.

I've reused old bolts & gasket, no issues.

I think one is meant to use thread sealant on the bolts? I can't remember if I did.
