Extending Bump Stops

I have a GU Patrol wagon and I have to extend my bump stops to stop the shocks bottoming out on full compression.

Has anyone got any suggestions as to the best method of doing this? New longer bump rubbers, packers what's the best, and if suggesting new bump rubbers what are the brands to look out for?

Appreciate any suggestions or advice.

I have a welded a piece of box to the diff but what you need to do is measure the gap between the shock mounts at ride height, then flex it up and measure your compressed and extended shock lengths and you can work it out

it helps if you have access to a fork lift as you can get the wheel to tuck up to the approriate position, before the shock bottoms out (mine has about 10 mm of shaft sticking out under compression) then measure the distance between the diff and the bump stop then fill the hole

I have gone up a step in shock size currently and I am currently looking at getting 80 series bump stops as the are quite long . but as I said you need your extended,compressed and ride height measurements before you do anything

Thanks Benny for the pics and the advice. I've fitted longer travel shocks as well, and took all the dimensions you spoke of, and worked out that I need to add about 40mm to the length of the stops to avoid the new shocks topping out at full flex. Just trying to work out the best option for increasing the length of the bump stop rubber or its mount.

I hadn't seen anyone with the box welded to the bump stop plate before, so I'll add your idea to the options.

You're lucky to have a forklift to check all this stuff with.

where are you located If the is a 4wd store near you they may have a travel ramp they should let you use superior engineering have theres out in the yard and I have used that a few times What type of lift kit do you have??

I'm in the Hunter Valley and don't know anyone close who has a travel ramp. I am quite confident that I have got the measurements right though, and will need to add 40mm to the length of the stops.

I fitted Landcruiser front bumpstops to my GU with 3" lift and then fitted my original front rubbers to my rear bumpstops, each giving about 50mm of additional rubber. I can take a pic of them if you like.
