Gday everyone,

Just bought my first patrol after owning a td5 Defender for 10+ years.

I went for the patrol for the bullet proof drive line and the looks to be honest. I've always had a soft spot for the late model GUs.

I picked up a 2011 CRD automatic full grandpa spec. Alloy bar, mild lift, IPF spotties (not working), a redarc brake controller and dual battery solenoid and a complete service history for all 200,000kms.
Been driving it about a week and really like it, like driving a big couch!

I don't want to mod it too much, my old Defender didn't have a bolt on it I hadn't turned and I'd rather like to just drive this one! My I aspiration is the Ultimate9 GU. In no particular order, looking at:
Good tyres, maybe 285/75/17s
Winch, thinking a hi speed low-mount runva on a stealth mount.
Maybe a snorkel?
Rear cargo barrier/rear shelf?

It's got some niggles I'd love some feedback on:
1. Slow to start. It turns quick for 5-10 seconds before starting. I noticed the fuel primer bulb has a small split so I've ordered a new one, will see if that helps but are there any other common checks?

2. Bit of transmission shudder. Happens when coming back on to power after coasting at speeds over 70-80 km/h. Trans fluid levels look fine and fluid looks OK, any thoughts? Is this just life with an older auto patrol or should I take it to a specialist?

3. A bit gutless at higher speeds. The engine revs easily but trying to accelerate up hill it just doesn't love it. Again is this just life with a CRD Patrol? It's not blowing heaps of soot or anything that I can tell, if anything feels under-fuelled. Could it be the prime bulb?

Anyway, glad of any replies and still loving a rig that doesn't let water pour in through the body gaps during a bit of rain haha!

200,000kms may need glow plugs. Mine had 2x dead ones a @ 218,000kms.

Unsure about the gear shudder, maybe consider dropping the fluid and changing the filter, etc. I did mine at 202,000kms and had heaps of crap on the magnet.

The bigger tyres would slow you down at high speed, stock size is 275/65/17 (8.87% bigger) maybe consider a intake cleaning/manual boost/retune/exhaust, it made a very noticeable difference with mine (about 30hp+ more at the wheels)

Other things to consider, manual boost control & egr blanking, decent catch can with fibrous filter, intake cleaning (mine was pretty dirty).

Welcome along.
Sounds like a nice car to get into.
I think you'll find the primer will fix a few of your issues. Just watch the bring on the filter as they can nip up and leak aswell.
As above a set of plugs, a good intake clean, egr block and manual boost control will have you singing in no time.
They sound nice too with a 3' exhaust.

Update - I have the tyres fitted, got the auto serviced and got the slow start fixed.

So I've had the 285/75R17s on and I have to say they are the perfect size on standard alloys I think. Nice and tall, no rub. I got Yokohama MTs and they are so far an excellent tyre - highly recommend!

I took the patrol to a local auto trans workshop and they gave it a service, changed fluid etc and added shudderfixx. Absolutely sorted now! No more annoying shudder!

I also took it to a local diesel mechanic - Queanbeyan Diesel Service. Absolutely recommend these guys! Even the lady running the front counter knows her stuff. They ran injector leak-down test and checked the return from the rail and found rail was leaking down. So they hooked me up with a new Bosch rail and it is sorted.

How do I add photos? I can't figure it out!

Also, I'm looking for a winch cradle but seems like they're all mostly out of stock - can anyone recommend the best option?

Cheers!
