Morning Team,
I'm installing new crown wheel & pinions to both my diffs along with new LGT E-Lockers into my 2002 TD42t St Coil Cab, I've found my pinion is too deep into the crown wheel and needs to be pulled out, its got no shims on the rear bearing only the spacer, looks like I am going to have to remove the spacer (3.30mm) to get the mesh into the middle of the tooth, my question are, 1- can I leave the spacer out? and 2 does anyone have the part numbers on new spacer and shims for front bearing preloads? I've got a full GQ manual and it has part numbers but I don't have the GU ones, and seeing as I'm a 2.5hr round trip to our nearest diff specialist (who wasn't interested in quoting me to do the work! probably because I'd already bought all the gear to do it myself) I thought I'd just search stores like Terrain tamer, Goodstate and Patrolapart, but most of them common outlets don't go by description in their internet stores, but part numbers come up, any help in direction would be greatly appreciated.

I honestly leave this to the diff specialists who do it every day unless you have a trade background in fitting or toolmaking - its a precision element that is under high load, a minor mis adjustment will reduce the life - you probably know this already and as you ay the specialist is a distance away and not willing to quote on a part dissembled job - I get that. I would think the pinion to crownwheel relationship as determine by the bearing clearances is going to need a spacer/shim of some sort - simple manufacturing tolerances at play. I guess if pushed you could set it up on the bench and 'blue the surfaces' to check the mesh contact matches readily available images? Beyond that I think its a workshop job.

Morning Peebee,
You are correct it is a specialists job, but as a retired mechanic I’ve got no qualms in understanding the job at hand, not a specialist by any means & don’t do them day in day out, but enough trade background to tackle the job confidently, so I guess in reality I just need to know part numbers for the spacers & shims available so I can order an array of different sizes & this is where I’m falling short so far. I’ve got a GQ workshop manual that has exactly what I need but there different numbers to the GU, when I can get access to the manuals here within this group I should be able to start moving forward again 🙂

All good, some of the tasks asked about rarely come with an explanation of the skillset of the owner, and at times the issues are going to land the person in higher financial pain than paying for the job done by someone skilled. As you say, you have the skills without doubt, hope you can get the answers, have you tried contacting Patrol A Part? They have a great team there who are skilled at the parts interpretation arena and hold a lot of stock outside of what Nissan Australia holds.

If the Diff is not originally from your vehicle, the answers you are looking for may differ to what you actually want...
