View Full Version : Intercooler pumps - what brands and models actually perform?

I am looking to hear recommendations on 12V Dc coolant pumps suitable to use in an intercooler system on my GQ. I have had 3 consecutive failures with davis Craig pumps, mechanical and so called rating performance claims that are non existent.

I have a very expensive metal bodied pump on the interchiller system, however it draws 25amps and has a guaranteed flowrate of 40lpm thru a 3/4" line. It is simply too expensive to replicate this on a system modification i am working on, so keen to hear what others have used.

I have a brass bodied positive displacement pump, however its noisier than the engine with water - not so bad with oils or thicker materials. It will do the job, but is also very heavy, so another challenge.

has anyone had success with diaphragm pumps? I would have maybe a 1m suction demand and a 6m discharge demand, thru a 3/4" hose. I prefer to run 3/4" hose - maybe 1" at a pinch but anything smaller or larger will be in effective or too difficult to configure.

The driver for this intercooler system upgrade is to improve the performance of the interchiller set-up. The time spent in the vehicle with 40degC ambient temps allowed me to root-cause the lack of performance and I have a solution in mind - just need another pump.

Not sure if this is the kind of thing you’re wanting but I run an Aeroflow pump with my W2A system. Has 1” barbs but there is a model with 3/4”. It’s rated at 46.6 l/min but no idea if it really does that.
It works for what I need.

Exactly John, thanks, have found it on ebay, waiting for a price offer response from Rolan, will see if the 3/4" unit can be bought at the same price as the 1"

What sort of flow do you need?
I recently fitted a 12v D5 Vario pump to our truck to circulate hot water (Hydronic heating). Has 5 speed settings & a max flow of 25 Lpm. Uses bugger all power & does the job for me.
Cost me $422.
They are set up for solar pumping, but commonly used for computer cooling by 'overclocking gamers'.

Cuppa i am looking at around the 25-30lpm, but it needs to be real flow, not some pump curve estimation. For that reason I am going to install a flowmeter in the line to validate. i did this with the interchiller pump and it delivers 40lpm, verified. Unfortunately that pump is now 41300 and I am not outlaying that for this revised circuit. I have bought the Aeroflow on the basis the rated output is 40lpm against a pressure of 10kpa, so will see how that works out. My only reservation is its a mag drive and unsure just how direct the flowrate is in reality, shear effect from the drive connection, as opposed to a direct drive where the amps simply go up or reach a plateau and it stalls. The Davis craig mag drive units i have tried were pathetic. Aeroflow make good lift pumps so will see.

I tried to respond to this last night but there was an issue. What size is the reservoir that you are using in this W/A system mate? why do you need 40Lt/m? it would seem to my logic that unless you are carrying 60lt into your cooling system the coolant will be flowing way to quick to efficiently cool but more importantly, once it has heat soak will struggle to recover. where are you going to mount the heat exchanger?

W/A is awesome, i have the Frozen Boost W/A in to GQ and have set it u a couple of different ways. The Hi Output pump that they recommend in that system is nowhere near that output thought.

I replied in detail then the forum crashed, frustrating, I expect 15lpm, heat sink wont be a problem with 4ft2 of radiator roof mounted with 4000cfm of slow speed cooling fans, second a/c chilled hex between air filter and s/c inlet, total system reconfiguration, and expecting more power by way of greater air density and engine inlet temps at ambient 40degC air temps at 100kmhr of 40 deg C instead of 90 as seen on the recent 4000klm trip. I will then optimise the actual components once I confirm the application, ie frozen boost and the like.

Tried to submit but resource limitation error coming up.
