Hi,

A few days ago, the crankshaft snapped minutes from home and only doing a simple 15min run to the shops and back. Only good thing is that it happened minutes from home so limped home then towed the next day to my mechanic.

The background is that we had just done a full rebuild with very little concessions with a reputable td42 rebuilder/expert in FNQ (recommended by forums and my mechanic back in syd). We're in bris these days and after lots of considerations we settled on going to him and making the 10hr drive north. We've just clocked over 10000km after rebuild and it was driving like a dream. in fact, i've driven it so much more and much longer distance (mostly highway km which may not necessarily be a good thing) since the rebuild, last 1.5mths we covered 5000km. the patrol had a bit of history doing the harder 4x4 stuff (6inch lift 37s) from the previous owner pre-2018 and since then, we've slowly converted it for touring (2inch 33s) and realised we're more suited to touring with some 4x4.

We're running a silvertop td42, 11mm Baileys pump, Mambo 18g turbo, dyno safe tune 160HP/448NM 19psi and using an NPC Viper xtra heavy duty Clutch and Lightweight Flywheel.

The world of Crankshafts is waaaayy beyond my knowledge and experience. I consider myself a beginner with mechanical/td42 since it's something i picked up just over 5yrs ago.

With the Viper combo as this may be a cause (maybe?) I went with the lightweight flywheel about 4yrs ago because i wanted to keep it as light as possible. i assumed that it's safer that way but also i heard that the usual viper flywheel in this combo is usually too heavy so some people would take 4kg off it. i'm now wondering if the viper flywheel was part of the problem?

Of course we're hurtting pretty bad that it's happened this soon after rebuild but i'm hoping others can share their knowledge and experiences and perhaps how to prevent it in the future.

a 2nd-hand crankshaft seems to be the way (of course reconditioned/test/balance/checked etc) and whether it's worthwhile going with a brand new genuine or a billet crankshaft. without knowing the problem, we might be just burning money and this will happen again after 30000km and potentially when we're in the middle of nowhere.

Appreciate whatever you can share to help.
