I took this off a looooong time ago, I have even galvanized the part, so I suppose it goes somewhere visible. It has an elastic belt to fasten something...

It holds the little tool kit pouch next to a jack in the boot or a tool kit for a bike under the seat

No bolts and nuts on the fuel tank? I guess if a bike gets out of gas there is no point in walking to the next gas station to buy a disposable jerry, right? Just undo the rubber band and take the tank with ya. LOL.

Interesting. I have neither the toolkit nor the OEM jack. Took a look at the jack place in the boot and it doesn't seem to have a place there for the rubber band.

Now, bike tool kit under the seat? What's up with the bike theme here? LOL.

Your photo reminded me of a battery retainer on a bike In my shed. The rubber strap and hook in bracket is definitely to keep something in place but quick and easy to remove. A Jack perhaps? I’m not familiar with the Y60 setup.

Did it come off your Patrol?

This is pretty typical under a motor bike seat but often they just use 1. Most of the cars i have owned including the Y62 carried a small tool kit like this held down beside the jack and often with a rubber strap.

Yes, I took it off myself, that's for sure.

With comments about this being a tool bag strap I searched "tool bag" on Partsouq under my VIN and the picture below came back, definitely the part in question. Still not sure where it goes, though. And I have two of them.

Looking at it again, I'm not so sure, the holes disposition is different.

You're right I shouldn't have replied.

No worries mate, always good to learn from the legends, even if it is about bikes.

I would also say a battery retainer, but not from your patrol…

This is the only pair of holes with the appropriate distance apart that I could find in the region. Seems ok to hold a bag of tools under the seat as people suggested. The opposite side has no similar holes for the second strap though.

Awesome mate, thank you!
My driver's seat is on the other side but it seems Nissan didn't bother moving the holes to make it more reachable for the driver.

Funny part is that I have two of those rubber holders. Not sure where the other came from.

Thanks Garret.
