hey guys,
I’m looking to purchase a Nissan GQ.
I’ve got someone I know who’s selling a TB42 carby with pretty low km and for a good price. However I was unsure about how reliable the TB42 are, I know it’s a petrol and they tend to be less reliable then a diesel but I wanted you guy’s opinion. Is the difference irrelevant? How many km’s do they go to if taken care of ?
Also what is an estimate to the fuel economy of the TB42 ? Let’s say it’s got 35’s on

After years of reading about the two engines, and listening to the owners of both, I can say that both engines are very reliable if serviced properly. When it comes to economy, you have to consider the purchase cost, the added servicing costs of a diesel and price of both fuels. Your planned usage can also play a part in your choice of engine. After market ignition systems are available for the TB42. If you are running 35" tyres, you are going to chew through a lot more fuel, with either engine, due to a higher rolling resistance and the extra weight of the tyres. Patrols are big, heavy vehicles with the same wind resistance as a stack of bricks, so fuel economy is always going to be poor. TD42s can have some over heating problems but there is plenty of info on the forum that deal with issue. Good luck with your choice.
