Crikey what an irritating thing is the factory up-and-down antenna. Grinding and groaning. And it has virtually no RF properties. Managed to extract the thing and bin it. Put in a real antenna that just stays up, and the Radio actually works now.

I am all in for solid non-retractable antennas, but I believe you could have saved the rubber wedge shaped thing from the original one to make this new one straight up without a bend. I am actually trying to find such solid one for my GQ and I have kept the original rubber/plastic thing that I mentioned. Where did you buy this one? Some online store?

Unfortunately the old rubber wedge doesn't fit. The antenna is just a twoway radio low band VHF whip, bent up to suit. One I had lying around.
