Happy Sunday team Np!

I need a new UHF, especially for the Simpson trip coming up and I’m completely lost, so many options!

I would prefer to stick with GME, I’ve got the GME 6.6dbi and I would prefer Din size as it would fit nicely but open to suggestions.

I don’t want to spend shiploads, I guess budget around $5-600 ish but I want to get something half decent so can be flexible, any help appreciated?

ICOM 410 is a solid choice Andy, waterproof to a meter, not that you want to test it! Great audio I have found.

One of my main struggles has been audio, inside my car is loud and I struggle to hear convoy chats, thanks Phill I’ll check it out.

Hook up an external speaker right behind your ear hole - you will hear it, talk to Darren, he is bound to have a tek screw he can 'lend you'.

I believe 4x4 24/7 had a dual antenna one on special low range and high range antenna that work at the same time, check it out. Great for the Simpson trip where it will be handy

I would be very interested to hear from a radio tech regards the efficiency of the two antennas hooked up and in close proximity, as recall a mate with a Codan HF experiencing difficulty getting out when 27mHz was the main communication radio - before UHF exploded onto the market, and the Codan dealer advised the close proximity of the 27mHz antenna to the 3-30Mhz antenna was the issue in that the 27mhz antenna was essentially receiving the bulk of the signal and killing the range. The solution was to unscrew the 27mhz antenna when transmitting, which I understand fixed the problem - maybe the UHF band is different or the radio compensates or nulls out the second antenna - again, curious only, may all be BS, however I know when Oricom launched their product was labelled 'cheap and cheerful by the opposition, however their market options suggest they have built up a fair demand, which you would think is based on quality and performance, not brand name perhaps.

We have 2 of the GME XRS radio which is the top of the range. It hides up under the dash and just have a plug for the hand piece.
Sound quality is unreal, plus it has a button which repeats the last message if you missed it.
They also have GPS functionality between XRS radios, I'm not entirely sure how it works but there will be quite a few of them on the trip so we should work it out before then.

I remember reading that somewhere and was keen to learn more about the GPS feature.

Would be bloody handy when we break away and finding camp spots or better tracks, etc!

+1 for the GME XRS.
I got the GME XRS Connect 4WD pack a few months ago at end of financial year sale time. I paid $519 delivered from Ryda via eBay.
Last year I was looking around Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales (November) and almost pulled the trigger on a GME XRS Connect Outback pack from Autobarns website for $480, but I really wanted the 4WD pack.
There are deals to be had if you can time it with those big sales.

I did just that, and for the same reasons. Used a speaker recovered from an old hands-free mobile phone car kit and made a little bracket that mounted under the rear door hand grip with wiring all concealed - no tek screws required and can be restored to original if required.87354

The speaker is completely redundant with the sound quality and volume that comes out of the hand piece.

I've just got a GME TX4500 and very happy with it. . Nice and simple has knobs which are easy to operate, sound is good. Have a GME XRS in the work ute, sure it's fine but find it hard to work out the menus etc all of the button's on the hand piece. Me and tech don't mix too well tho lol. . .

That’s exactly what I’ve got right now TX4500 and I love it but the screen is fading out and not very legible and speaker is just too hard to listen to in my car unfortunately.

Maybe sound deadening and fastening whatever rattlening body panels would be better on ya ears than a more powerful speaker. I don't know, when you say you can't hear anything on your running car makes me wonder if a louder CB, louder stereo, etc would actually be doing you damage instead.

Yeah the speaker itself isn't working the best, I think it has been damaged as well, it's a bit muffled too.

Yeah the screens stuffed as well, you can barely see what’s displayed anymore let alone what settings are turned off etc

The man is looking for excuses PB, let go of providing fixes! LOL. If the missus reads it in here, the new GME budget will be turned into gardening or else! LOL

I am a radio technician and would recommend Icom IC455.

I checked out the icom IC455 but am wondering if there's something else you would recommend in a lower price bracket? Or do you get what you pay for?

.......from under the great down under.

I have only delt with GME and Icom so not the bast at giving advice on cheaper brands. Our work mainly sells commercial radios to mining and emergency services so very different to the CB market. Sorry I can't be more help.
