Hi Folks,

The bloody zipper on the RV5 is not grabbing anymore.

Does anyone know of any magical trick to get it to work again by chance?

I’m assuming I need to pull the stitching off at the end to get it to grab again?

I dunno about the oztent in particular, but I usually just move the zippier up and down furiously while I swear at it and eventually it somehow grabs again?
I am guessing you have already tried that though!

Yeah I have, I screamed louder this time and it did grab but then came off further down.

Bugger it!

It’s bloody Lachy who did this!

He opens the tent like a menace tearing the two flaps open like a curtain.

I have had success in the past by crimping the zipper with some pliers without removing it from the zip.
Just try to close the sides that slide along the teeth by putting the pliers on either side of the zipper while it is still in place.

I’ll try that, thanks mate!

Didn’t work but closer inspection I reckon Lachy has damaged some teeth at the top unfortunately.

get it closed as high as you can, and a couple stitches with builders string/fishing line/heavy cotton, so the zipper can't go above the damaged teeth...mattress needle or sacking/darning needle do the job

And if you can spare the weight, and find someone who still does it, replace with brass zips that will probably outlive your kids...

There’s a few damaged teeth in various places unfortunately.

There’s a company in Ferntree Gully who repairs these pretty cheap that MB has used.

I’ll find out there contact details

Maybe time for velcro. Lachy can rip away to his heart's content.

Bugger, JJ’s in Ferntree Gully have retired damn it and the other lady is now operating in Tarwin Lower which is too far.

Does anyone know anyone around Melbourne?

You should get a new bag too, I always find I can pack up the Oz tent in 3 minutes but takes me half hr to get it into the bag.

Definitely working on that Tony, it’s my pet hate with these tents!

Got quoted $220 for a new zip. I know it’s probably a lot of work to replace zip but I need to think about an alternative fix or just suck it up lol

Cost us $600 to get 4 zips replaced in our Tvan a couple of years ago in Cairns, which is more expensive than down south - was told Melbourne price at the time would have been $450. (I removed & refitted the tent). They were all long zips which went from top, around the curved bottom & back to the top of the doors in heavy canvas. Yours I believe is a straight single length in ripstop nylon? If so $220 sound excessive to me, I'd phone around to see if you can get it done cheaper .... but don't skimp on zip quality - they all look similar but YKK will last longer.

Yep that price is to remove the entire frame inside tent too which looks like a nightmare to do.

I’ve done a bit of research and apparently this little guy has fixed a lot of peoples problems.

For $25 it’s worth having a crack first.

Worth a try, but didn't work for me. I still have the set (3 sizes). I doubt they'll help you if your zip has teeth missing as mentioned previously, but I wish you luck.

I’ll have to have a good look at it again cuppa, they might just be bent, fingers crossed!

Eureka!

This little gadget is awesome, should probably keep one in your patrol for emergency zip fixes when camping.

Had to straighten a few teeth and this thing grabs and holds the zips perfectly!
