Apologies if this has already been covered, but I wanted to ask about people's experiences with the Y62 auto and towing.

We tow a big van, just on 3400kg.

I have a ScanGuage on mine and the trans temp about matches the water temp, a far cry from the LC200 where the trans temp ran close to that of the surface of the sun, even on a cold day.

Over on the Modified Y62 Face Book pages, there has been a lot of talk lately about Y62 trans failure when towing big loads, like our van. Wholesale Autos in Melb have come up with a trans cooler.

I would have argued that this was not necessary based on my 3 years of towing experience with the Y62, but may be it is? I mean, it was always the done thing to add an extra cooler on any auto towing, but is it really needed on the 'Big Nissan'?

Thanks,

Mark

Hi mate.

For what a replacement auto is worth. I would be installing a cooler regardless. Peace of mind really.

There's a video of their cooler. The Y62 already has a cooler. They show it too. Evidently the thermostat that opens when the transmission has some tenperature, can fail, which will result in the transmission fluid by-passing the Nissan's cooler. The company can put in their own thermostat, and they have their own cooler as well, which I think replaces the vehicle's one. Also they have a larger transmission pan, which is alloy (rather than steel) with cooling fins, which also lowers the transmission temperature. There cooler was the same price as the replacement pan ... claims are that the pan lowers the temps a lot too, and also by increasing the transmission fluid volume, a major cooling benefit occurs.
