hi can any one help i have a 99 GU with the 2.8 having trouble to start when is cold not hot. I leave the light on till it turns off if i do it a second time it starts easier. Should i replace the glow plugs and temp sensor at all? If so should i get genuine or after market.... and in general are the 2.8's an ok donk as some people tell me that it is a piece of crap like the ZD30 & will go boooom with out warning ? thank you for any help on the matter

also is it a big job to replace the glow plugs and sensor at all. thank you

I would be getting it diagnosed properly before you start throwing fist fulls of money at it replacing parts that may not be faulty.

Take it to a diesel specialist.

You can check the glow plugs with a simple Ohm meter. The plugs fro the rear three cylinders are different, so check in the service manual how to measure them.

Hey Aron.
Plugs must not be the reason even if You change them correctly! (look what >turtey< says). First check compression. RD28 likes to live with overheatting - thats might be Your problem.
Answer me if You are the owner for long time? Or this "starting problems" occurs suddenly?

Have had this prob with alot of rd28, have found that corrosion build up under the glowplug rail to cause the fault. If this is removed and cleaned can help fix the problem, but while your there you might as well replace the glow plugs. sinful

Hi Aaron,

You need to check your glow plugs first. I have the same problem on my 2.8TD and found three of my glow plugs are buggered.

Here is a video from Terrain Tamer that I followed on how to check them. It is really simple.

Just a quick point. It sounds like your glow plugs could be faulty. Sometimes one or two faulty plugs can make a difference from cold. If you do take them out, please please learn from someone else's mistakes. Use a torque wrench set to 30nm to undo them with plenty of oil. Don't grab a big bar and say "What's the worst that could happen!"
If one breaks its the head off and tears in the beer!

my nephew has a 2.8. i drove recently and he told me to wiat till the iarbag light goes out and it goes first hit. a bit late maybe but if you haven't poored heaps of cash into it. this might work.

It may be that you are not waiting long enough for the glow plugs relay to click off before trying to start. If you are, then i would suggest testing the glow plugs instead of just replacing them.
