So after cape Jaffa and discussion with interested people I’m going to put forward my proposal, us gropers will head to laverton around 24th may and head to coober pedy via the Anne Beadell track and meet you Victorians on Monday 3rd June giving you guys two days to get there from Melbourne. From there off to oodnadatta and Dalhousie, setup camp and next day a trip into mount dare and back, around the 6th head across the French line taking 4 days, conquer big red then into birdsville for a rest day then haddons corner , Cameron’s corner and from there us gropers will head back and down the strezleckie track and home! Please respond if you are definitely interested, this will be an epic trip and if anyone is after a bigger challenge then you are welcome to come west and do the Anne Beadell with us.

You're correct. LOL. Checked out 2024 and still can't do. Not going to drive for 2-3 days, spend 2 nights camping and then drive 2-3 days home - as much as I'd like to.

Spewing. If I'm still around for the 20th meet up, I'll be there. I'll be retired by then. lol.

Hey bud we need to revisit these dates when I have not been drinking. The proposed dates don't work with School Holidays in any state, this will be an issue for many and most. We need to do it either the last week of school to lead into School holidays or leading out of holidays. The dates proposed will require kids to take 3 weeks off school ans get home to then take 2 weeks holidays.

Darren, open to dates but bear in mind the big red bash is in the first weekend of July, that’s why those dates to avoid the traffic jam but happy to move back.

Ok can we suggest some dates.
April 24
Specifically 6th of April to the 28th of April.
Yes it's not ideal with temps but.
Fresh dunes as its only recently opened from the summer close, less traffic and covers school holidays for heaps to attend.

Big red bash 4/6 July, maybe go after maybe 14 to 21st July that should give us time to be clear of the hordes? Also weather will be better hopefully. Meet at Coober Pedy 14th and head from there, looks like there will only be 3 of us from WA now

BigRAWesty
15th January 2023, 07:59 AM
That time line does work better Strop.
Vic I belive start their holidays on the 6th of july, 1 week before SA.
And SA finish on the 21st.
We really need to keep the school day losses to a minimum with some of the kids getting into more senior years.

yea sorry i stuffed that up, vic start on the 29th of june dont you?
I messed up the weeks...

I think meeting at Coober Pedy on the 7th gives you week 1 of school holidays to get there (ularu if that was your plan?), cross in the second week of the holidays meeting at CP on the 7th, trek home in the first week of school.

I think that's closer to what we discussed wasn't it?

We could possibly leave earlier and meet at Coober Pedy say Friday 5th and leave on Sunday 7th July that way the victorians can take their time coming over as they start school holidays on the 1st ? And kallen and Nissa can leave on the Friday or Saturday and be there for departure on the Sunday. That also gives most people the opportunity to have a day to look around, or even happy to meet on say the Tuesday 2nd, leave Coober Pedy on Thursday 4th. From there to Oodnadatta and Dalhousie, definitely a day or 2 at Dalhousie during which time you would need to go to mount dare to top up fuel, that will also give us time to miss the big red bash by a couple of days and hopefully the track is not too chopped up. From there four days to cross so that should give us ample time as last time we took 3 days and the second day was a big one so I think 4 days should be early stops for the day, stay 2 days. From Birdsville it’s up to everyone what they want to do go directly down Birdsville track or I’m going to haddons corner camp there, I think last time we left Birdsville around 10am, then to Innamincka via the dig tree, stay there then onto Cameron corner 2 easy days and again spent a last night together at the pub but camping at the corner, then the wa contingent and I guess kallen and Nissa will head directly to the strezleki track then down through Quorn, the Victorians can head with us or go directly through broken hill.

mudrunner let me know what you think please mate!

When the first meet up in the middle was being planned I was interested, but lacked confidence, thinking there would be a good chance I'd hold everyone up.
I recall a great time was had by all.

This time I find myself still putting it (a Simpson crossing) off, not lack of confidence any more, but because I want to do it in comfort & take my time. 3 weeks Birdsville to Mt Dare sounds about right to me. I feel similarly about the Canning Stock Route too. I have resolved that although towing the Tvan is feasible I don't want to do it. It will have to wait until we have a suitable truck based camper. I'm well past sleeping on the ground.

I didn't regret not going last time, & I don't think I will this time, but I did enjoy hearing all about the last forum adventure & will look forward to this one.

Who knows, if we find the right truck we might even bump into you all mid Simmo! So I'll keep an eye on what you are all up to.

This was always going to be difficult, so many needs to try and cover.
Stropp ill have a better look at that time line in front of a computer and note pad. But the concept sounds good.

Unfortunately this is a driving trip. Though we will be having some nice breaks along the way.
Being a Simmo crossing with a group we do need to be flexible with the time line as it can change is a second.

We are also looking to do a but of schooling on the road, pulling up a bit earlier and giving the kids a designated learning time.
We're a long way off but with we do go mid year be sure to start talking to your teachers about getting some work packs to take with us..

If traffic could be bad across the main line is dropping down an option?
A bit tougher but imo still well within our vehicle and personal capacity?

How would I go being on petrol?
I can carry 210l in total, I know that it's going to be a very expensive fuel bill, but how far is it inbetween stops for unleaded.
