My 2018 Series 4 Y62 has now covered 135000 km, much of it towing a 3300 kg van in 5th at 90 kph. When towing, I change gears manually. The transmission was fully serviced at 60000 km, then again at 100000 km.
I keep a very close eye on my Scangauge TFT reading, which is generally in the mid 70 cel range, with the highest being 86 cel.
Although the common Y62 issue of flaring between changes has always been evident, it recently started shuddering badly in 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th, particularly when towing.
A highly reputable automatic transmission specialist here in Perth confirmed my worst suspicions - a defective torque converter.
He indicated mine will be the 5th Y62 transmission he has re-built this year, and that the main problem has always been the torque converter, caused by the transmission design whereby the converter locks - unlocks - locks at every gear change - this means that although there is no torque converter slippage and thus less heat generated, the torque converter nevertheless is working much harder locking and unlocking, and eventually fails.
He will completely strip the transmission to eliminate any metal which may have ended up where it shouldn't be, as well as installing a re-built torque converter.
My question is, do any forum members know whether a heavy duty torque converter/clutch pack is available for these transmissions? My enquiries so far have indicated NO, but some forum members may know otherwise.
