View Full Version : Ok to install pyro probe at start of exhaust?

I'm going to be installing the PYRO gauge and probe this weekend and finish the turbo.
I have already installed the turbo and 3" dump pipe. Bit of a nightmare to install a second hand turbo but I have not drilled any holes for the pyro probe to measure the EGT's. The turbo and dump pipe is never coming off again....lol
Anyways, just want to double check that It's ok to drill the hole for the probe at the top of the exhaust just under the dump pipe?
I'm pretty sure it will be fine but just want to double check before I drill and install the exhaust. I understand that the further away from the engine you install the probe the less accurate the readings will be but hoping just under the dump pipe will be fine...
Cheers for any feedback!

On the dump pipe would have been better but at the top of the section just under the dump pipe wil be OK.

PHEWWWWWWW!!!!
Thanks Tony, I knew I should have drilled it in the dump pipe before installing. Like I said though, I went through hell trying to put that bugger in and it aint coming off...lol
Cheers mate!
I guess it could play it safe monitoring the temps and keep in the back of my mind there might be a slightly lower reading maybe?

Handy to know...I would be interested to see how much temperature change you would expect between the top of dump pipe and just under the dump pipe.
I know for the 3.0l the temp at dump pipe should be around the 500-550deg mark

AB it would not be that big a deal to fit a bung in-situ into the dump pipe mate. Any exhaust place could do that for you in 10 minutes for probably $20. I would be getting a bung fitted into the dump pipe or you will loose some of the known calibration (ie. you wont know how much heat loss that you are getting and all other readings are based on a dump pipe fit up.)
Run the probe for your Pyro and get it all ready then head down to your local to drill the hole and weld on the bung. It's Post turbo so there is Zero risk to the engine while welding the bung. Your Pyro probably came with the bung you need to weld on??
Why compromise for $20?? you have done a heap of work mate. seems silly?
Sorry bud, my 2c

I agree mate, I was actually thinking about just taking the dump pipe off this morning down in the shed so I'll take it off this weekend and do the job properly!
Cheers for the nudge mate!

what exacty needs to be done to get the dump pipe out?
Is it a massive job? Im having trouble finding an exhaust place who wants to do it.

Not sure on your model but should be 6 or 7 bolts to take out. 3 each side of the pipe (might be a 4th on the exhaust side).
You'll have to probably go from underneath the car. Shouldn't be too hard. You may have to loosen the exhaust too to make sure the gaskets go back on neatly but see how you go.

I am disappointed you cant get an exhaust shop to do that for you mate, an alternative may be to look at getting a Dyno Tune(Highly recommend this) and asking them to weld the bung in for you?? They will often drill a hole in your dump pipe for their probe then put a spot weld in to close the hole when they are done. Get then to fit your Pyro bung and then they can use that too.
Just a thought, cant see why it cant be welded in place. Lazy buggers. They want to sell you a new exhaust.

Yeah another 4 exhaust places didn't really want a bar of it today either.
$300-$400 quotes just to put the bloody thing in the dump pipe :(
All saying it has to come out to be done, and it's a 3-4 hour job

Tony, something interesting to note was that recently I replaced my TaipanXP dump pipe with a mild steel pipe with the mild steel one having the probe entry at the bottom of the dump pipe. Now on the same car under the same conditions, there was a 45 degree difference. Personally I trust the taipan pipe more due to their R&D into their systems, but 45 degree was a huge margin over 10 inch of pipe.

2 inches/50mm aft of the dump pipe flange is ideal.
