As the title suggests, id like to tow a single axle caravan Tare weight 2160kg.
I'm hoping my TB 4.2 can tow this caravan 1992 efi, but possibly a turbo could be beneficial, or maybe an engine swap.
any thoughts on my decision would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think your wagon will have any trouble pulling it, though it might get a bit asthmatic on hills.

A turbo setup will definitely improve acceleration, but at the cost of more fuel (No such thing as a free lunch) and when you have the power, you tend to use it!
I would be checking the rings/bores and valves before slapping a turbo on, it's not high mileage for these engines, but it ain't new either. Probably a set of injectors too as I think the turbo ones have a slightly different spray pattern. And you'll want it all tuned right, from the start.
You will possibly need a new fuel pump and will certainly have to chip/modify the injection/ignition timing. And get an EGT (exhaust gas temp) installed. Pistons get melty above about 500°

I can't think of a more appropriate engine swap unless you were thinking turbo-diesel TD42T

Or, of course, an LS2, 3 or 7 V8 :D

What sort of boost numbers are you wanting? How will you reduce the compression? Turbo pistons or thicker head gasket?

FWIW: filthyrich Mate, we bought a SWB Maverick GQ a year or so ago that had recently blown the head. Sellers friend installed a TB45 efi and converted it back to carby basics with TB42s distributor and modified TB45 cog (shortened length too maybe)
Long story short, it goes hard as all getup towing our 2,000kg work trailer albeit I am admittedly having a distributor bearing rebuild underway.
A big + is that a TB42 <>TB45 conversion certainly in Victoria is listed as below 20% upgrade and requires no engineering, simply paperwork over the counter to update engine numbers on the system.

a turbo definely wakes up the tb42e, on 4psi mine made 100kw at the wheels on 33's on 10 psi it made alot more but never redyno'd it, the down side is damn did it drink, 25-30l or 98 octane per 100km when towing, left mt 79 dual cab for dead, still kinda regret letting it go ah well maybe build another one day
