Auto box wont up change

Hi, I have a 96 Terrano , the problem is sometimes it wont upchange gears at all, If I turn it off and restart it will change fine. I believe its either a solenoid or a sensor. Im a good home mechanic but have never worked on auto boxes before. Can someone please give me some pointers. Thanks from Dagwill

Check the wiring loom and connectors to the box. Check the fluid level. When was it last serviced? Could it be crap blocking the filter?

Thanks mudnut, I changed the filter and fluid. I had not thought of electrical connections.

What condition was the fluid and how blocked was the filter? Was there a burnt smell or a heap of clutch material deposited?
