Recently back from a four week trip along the South Australian coastline. Started at Nelson and ended at Ceduna, then home via Broken Hill.

We stayed mainly in caravan parks with only a few free camps along the way. We travelled 5,700km and averaged just over 17l/100km. Tried as hard as we could to stay along the coast and pretty much covered all three Peninsula’s, included plenty of rough road and occasional sandy runs. I did promise my wife it would be a smooth trip BUT sometimes you take a wrong turn.

Absolutely loved it, some areas along the Eyre Peninsula rival the Great Ocean Road and the beaches are an ocean swimmers dream (provided you don’t mind sharing with Great Whites). Unfortunately I couldn’t take my diving gear.

Unfortunately due to health issues this looks like being our last extended trip and the caravan will most likely be sold.

Yorke Peninsula

Previously been to the Yorke Peninsula on diving trips to Ewens & Piccaninny Ponds and Beachport and a visit to Mount Gambier. This was a chance to relax and have a better look along the coastline. Amazing place, we did nearly every track we could find that lead to the coast. Highlights were Victor Harbour, Cape Jervis and Rapid Bay.

Fleurieu Peninsula

After a night in Adelaide with family we headed to the Fleurieu Peninsula. Only a quick visit and highlights were Edithburgh, Marion Bay and Port Hughes. Would have loved to spend a bit more time here but that clashed with Adelaide Cup long weekend and every place was booked out. We headed inland and caught up with family for lunch at Kapunda which was great.

PORT LOWLY, WHYALLA, PORT LINCOLN & COFFIN BAY

Next stop was Point Lowly on our way to Port Lincoln with stops along the way at Whyalla and Tumby Bay. Amazed at how warm the water was in the Spencer Gulf, been years since I swam and snorkelled in the ocean without a wetsuit. Visit to Lincoln National Park was an experience, we were at Cape Donington when we were hit by a supercell thunderstorm. Interesting to say the least, we watched in come in across the ocean and the lightening was something I’ve never experienced before. It didn’t last long but road conditions changed from corrugations with dust to water with corrugations. Not an issue for the Patrol but visibility was pretty poor. We took the only open road for a quick look at the South coast of the park then headed back to Port Lincoln. A bit of water across the road at places but it soon cleared up.
While based at Port Lincoln we checked out Coffin Bay and the National Park.

ELLISTON, STREAKY BAY & CEDUNA

After Coffin Bay we headed to Elliston. Spent several days there and at Streaky Bay exploring the surrounds and enjoying the ocean. Finishing at Ceduna we were on the home run via Kimba and Port Augusta.

BROKEN HILL

BROKEN HILL, SILVERTON

I always like to take a different track home so we went via Broken Hill. Been there a couple of times previously but had never seen it green. They had floods a few weeks before we arrived and the damage was pretty evident on the trip up and in some place in town. Obligatory trip to Silverton, Mundi Mundi plains and the Umberumberka Reservoir. Amazing to see this in flood after being completely dry on our last trip.
Finally got back to Ballarat and had to put on long pants for the first time in months.

Glad you had a great trip Jack. Some great coastlines over there. Would've been good to get out into some less populated areas & folk in those small SA towns always struck me as particularly warm & friendly. Shame about the van going, someone is going to get a very nice unit!

Looks like one awesome trip! My mate used to have a shack on the beach at Kellede Bay (near Coffins) and we used to get over there as much as possible. Gods country.

Thanks Jack, great report mate! Been too long since I've been over to SA (coming up to 3 years now), bloody virus. Your pics brought back some great memories. One thing though, Ceduna's only half way mate! My favourite playgrounds are west and north of there :)

Happy to see you had a great time in my neck of the woods. I was in Edithburgh yesterday for work and spend a lot of time traveling around SA both working and holidaying. Sorry to hear you are selling your van.

Great pics mate. I've only been as far as the Limestone coast and I was in awe. I'd love to do a trip similar to yours one day. Very inspiring. Thank you.

I reckon my wife would like your van too.

Same here, only spent minimal time there previously and that was dive trips. This was a dedicated sightseeing trip, didn’t book any accommodation so free to stay or move. Can’t recommend the place highly enough, also a fisherman’s paradise.
You could see the schools of salmon from the piers and in some cases the cliffs. Also saw heaps while snorkelling, plenty of squid and oysters.
Regret not bringing my big rods but probably wouldn’t have caught anything anyway.

Like Plasnart mentioned earlier, apparently it’s even better further west.

I wouldn't say better mate, but there is not a part of the SA coast that isn't spectacular. And then there's the amazing mallee dune country north of Ceduna. You can (and really could) get lost in there. So many unmapped exploration tracks out there. And then there's the Nullarbor proper. Get north of the railway and it's something else. Could go on!

Don't know what happened earlier but obviously had a technical (or nuff nuff issue!) and also meant to include get over further west from Ceduna to Fowlers Bay for amazing sand dune driving, beach camping and surf fishing.

Of course the famous Cactus Beach is there for you too just south of Penong if you want to ride world class waves with white pointers!

I'll watch from the beach thanks!
